The Great Debate #11: Your Favorite Ally

By Guest, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

This will not always be about what's best, also what you like. What is your favorite ally? Favorite, not best.

My personal favorite ally is Ruby Standish. I've got her three times now by the encounter in the Lodge and I really like her. She's not the best, obviously, but a free unique item plus +2 to sneak is very nice if you ask me. Ofcours she's not even in my top 5 best allies, but I have a weak spot for her.

What is your favorite ally? (again, favorite, not what you think is the best)

Links for the previous Great Debates.

I've always had a soft spot for David Packard. I think he gives you a skill, and having a +2 to combat checks and i think evade checks is very, very helpful.

I'll never complain about Granny Orne or Professor Rice, though :3

From the base game, I enjoy Eric Colt because of his speed boost.

There! That's one for every expansion.

Calvin Wright (from Arkham League II)!

Since the Game Trade Magazine advertisment apparently shows him as an investigator in the Innsmouth expansion, I guess we'll never see him as an ally outside the League, but I've really enjoyed playing with him.

I hope he doesn't remain an ally. He would be too broken during final combat against the likes of Hastur and Yig, specifically. And by "too broken" I mean "impossible to lose."

My favorite ally hands down is the Messenger, from CotDP. I LOVE the idea of having Nyarlathotep as an Ally, especially if he's the AO you're facing!

Erica Carlyle. I know she's not the strongest, but she was my favorite when new allies were first released in CotDP even though arguably The Messenger was a bit stronger. Still, for my playing style, I'd often prefer the extra cash with combat bonuses over protection in horror checks. And besides ::cough cough:: ::wink wink:: have you ever *looked* at The Messenger?

In terms of strength I would pick Professor Rice.

Well he could be modified a bit, for example, he could run away when the AO emerges (he doesn't seem the bravest of individuals from the storyline) and choosing him could still require the loss of a unique item (as per the current startup League rules) -- then he wouldn't be too broken. In any case, he's been fun to play with so far.

Erich Weiss because I'm really really good at being delayed oh the +2 evade and spells is good...did I mention I'm good at being delayed? Also the Mythos card the "King of Cards Cancels Show" would be cool to get the Witch and Warlock trophies from that card!

Uh huh. Even back when I was only using Curse of the Dark Pharaoh by itself, I never collected any trophies via that encounter.

Eric Colt and... fortune teller personlady from the base game, for the speed and clues respectively.

Granny Orne is quite wonderful, especially when paired with other 'clue' effects like Mythos Lore and Research Materials.

Normally, I don't go out of my way to pick up allies, since we mostly go for sealing and blow all our trophies for clues. When I do get one I just think of it as a really nice bonus.

Tom "Mountain" Murphy. He is my favorite and my groups favorite. There is always a cheer when he is in the game. The Messenger is a close second. Professor Rice, Basil Elton, and Granny Orne round out our top 5.
