Help with buying expansions

By renediffie, in X-Wing

Hi Guys

I just recently got the base game. Its however very quickly clear that expansions are recommended(almost required) to play the game to its potential. I was hoping some of you experienced players could help me out. I would like to be able to build 100pts fleets. Can you shed some light on what would be good to buy to get to this point? And is it possible doing this while still paying the rent next month? :)

On a sidenote i was looking at the Millenium Falcon. Is it just me or does a lot of the fun in the game go away when the ship can fire 360 degrees? It would seem to me that it would loose that dogfighting feel.

Thank you in advance!

It makes a really good anchor for your force to move around, but you still need to think about what your doing to maximise it's use. It's expensive so generally you will end up with a couple of models swarmed by masses of small fighters on the other side.. It's nice to mix things up a bit, otherwise things can get very samey after a while.

Also it's only got an agility of 1, and not a brilliant dial, so if you all target it in the same turn it will take a lot of hurt. However it takes skill to set that up.

Hi.

I'm a total newbie myself, played my first game this friday. I asked the same question as you did and among all the great answers one thing all agreed on. You should buy 2 x core set. Partly to get more ships and partly to get more dices. I did that plus 1 y wing. I haven't tried out the y wing. However I HAVE made an order on the entire 2nd wave :)

The best adveice I got was to get 2 x core set and then 1 x every thing else. Including the x wing and tie expansion due to the pilot cards that are exclusively in those two expansions. And then if you wanna go for a good all around upgrade it to 2 x everything which is what I will do eventurally. I'll get one of everything and then maybe an extra later on. Except maybe for the unique ships like millenium and slave. But the point was that you don't really need to get 4 x every ship if you don't wanna participate in tournaments or if you only wanna focus on either the rebels or empire.

My 2 cents :) and welcome

Hi

I just got my core set 3 weeks ago. For now I would buy another starter set to get the 2 Ties and another X-wing, plus you are going to find that the extra dice and spare templates are not a bad thing to have on hand. You can get the new Tie Advanced and A-Wing plus the Falcon and Slave for fun too.

It depends on how much you want to spend I supose. The best prices I have found are at Cool Stuff.

Thank you for the quick answers. I have no intentions of playing this competetively at all.. This is solely to play with my friends and have fun. I was hoping to do it without spending hundreds of dollars. But that was a pipedream maybe :)

Thanks for that link. Thats half the price of what i found in my country. Guess i will order if they deliver to Denmark.

I agree with two core sets. Then I would invest in the following in this order:

Xwing exp

TIE fighter exp

TIE adv exp

TIE int exp (2)

Y-wing

A-wing (2)

after that I would even consider a second TIE exp and a third core set before getting 2 more interceptors a third Awing and the Falcon and Slave 1.

You bet!

I was very happy to find Cool Stuff myself! I think they deliver world wide.

I have already spent $150 on Ebay and almost as much at Cool Stuff. It is to much fun to collect and play with the toys for this excellent game!

Just curious. Beside the obvious that you get the ships, why a third core set? No sarcasm or anything, I just wanna know what your thoughts are behind that buy since I can't see the adventage and it might be something I'd do if can see a good reason :)

And don't even think about looking at the re-paint threads...I haven't painted any miniatures in my life and never understood why people spent time and money on it...until now. MAN! if it wasn't enough paying to get everything, if you go look at those threads you'll beginning to use money on paint as well :D I know I'm considering it hehe

I think we newbies should wait and buy a third box after the NEW reprinted edition is available. I am sure there will be some fun little changes to the contents. After all there is an "Updated" banner on the image FFG is showing, IMO that means something cool is inside, that none of us have yet...

Hm, I'm not so sure. I also do Lord of the Rings LCG and their "updated" versions of those core sets doesn't even have all the erratta card text fixed yet. Even if it's a 2013 edition. So at best the updated version of the ST XW core set will have cards with edited text if there has been any erratta yet. But I'm pretty sure there won't be anything else special about it.

We gotta, you know...Ha,Ha!

My paint will come later as I want to get about 60 ships first...

60!!! Wow that's on heck of a collection! Read about a guy in this forum...in the "Show off your fleets" thread...this is what he wrote:

"I have not had time to lay them all out and photograph them yet but maybe this weekend I can pull out a good mat and have a go.

X-Wings 24

Y wings 6

MF (Revelle stand in) 1

Tie Fighters 39

Tie Advanced 8

Imperial Shuttles (F-Toys) 2

20mm Revelle series models:

X Wing 6

Tie Advanced 3

Tie Interceptors 3

I missed out on the sales for the Interceptors and A Wings so I am waiting to order those, totals above are not my final numbers as I have a "few" more to add to those totals.

Hint: I will end up with 100-104 X-Wing series ships before Wave 3 comes out.

Yeah, I am in this for good and real. I grew up with Star Wars, like most people here I think, and now that FFG has made X-Wing, I have a cool long term game to play after walking away from GW 40K. I love this game and the miniatures.

How much paint do you think we'll need...a gallon?

Well I've got 8 TIE fighters and 4 Xwings. If you plan to pick up just as many TIE's and X-wings then it makes sense to pick up three core sets. One expansion of an X-wing and two expansions of the TIE will allow you to field any number of unique TIE and X-wing pilots with three core sets.

True, but you miss out on some of the upgrade cards from the X-wing expansion...okay, so who am I kidding? Nobody fields R5 Astromech anyway. But if you DO want more than one R5 Astromech, it might be worth considering picking up more than one X-wing expansion pack. I have 7 TIE fighters: 2 core sets and 3 expansions. Was it the right choice? I don't know. It works for me. But I just can't talk myself into buying that 8th TIE fighter. Just doesn't seem worth the 15 bucks. Law of diminishing returns and all.
