Dodge AND Parry ?

By Windsweet, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hi.

I just quick-read the posts and didn't find this question asked, so sorry for double posting, if I missed it.

My question is:

Can a character use dodge and parry as reaction in the same round?

Example:

A has swift attack and successfully attacks B.

B uses parry to counter the first attack.

Can B now use dodge to avoid being hit by the second attack?

Thank you for your answers.

You only have one reaction each round. To make more than one dodge or parry you'll need either the Step Aside talent or the Wall of Steel talent, which gives you an additional reaction each round which can only be used to dodge (Step Aside) or parry (Wall of Steel).

If you have Step aside and Wall of Steel does that mean you can use your normal reaction once for either, then an extra reaction for parry and an extra reaction for dodge?

Yes it does.

You get one free reaction per round, whicc can be either a dodge or a parry.

Step Aside gives you an extra dodge.

Wall of Steel gives you an extra Parry.

If you had both Talents then yes, I would allow 1 dodge, 1 parry and 1 dodge or parry.

*cough*Probably overdoing it to call it broken. But an extra dodge or parry by itself is way more powerful than most other talents, and whereas most character improvements are essentially optional, allowing you to custom-build a character from whichever elements you like the most, these are so good that only a crazy person would neglect to take them as early as possible. The multi-attack talents are similar, in that if you want to be a combat character of the appropriate type you simply have to take them, as early as possible. But unlike the multi-attack talents, the extra-reaction talents are useful for anyone who thinks they might ever be attacked, i.e. everyone.

Also, being able to avoid three attacks in a round is. just. amazing.

*cough*

I took it to mean that you get 2 reactions, and can then choose to either dodge or parry on both of them. ie. 1 Dodge/Parry, and then 1 Dodge/Parry. The advantage to taking both of the talents being that you can choose between which one you use. But that's just me.

Oh yeah... cough cough. lengua.gif

Three *melee* attacks - which, funnily enough, is exactly what someone with Lightning Attack can inflict upon you.

Otherwise, yes, it's pretty strong. However, there are quite a few "Must Have!" talents and skills in the system: Every psyker will go get Psy Ranks and Favored by the Warp as soon as they appear on his advancement table. Other characters have likewise tendencies towards the Dodge skill, Jaded, Mighty Shot and probably quite a few others as well.

Nope, the talent says you get one free dodge/parry in addition to whatever reaction you choose to employ (there are after all stuff like psychic powers, the Logis Implant or a Ballistic Mechadendrite).

What he said!

*passes the cough bottle round the room...*

If someone can attack 3 times (lightning attack) then I don't have a problem allowing someone with the proper Talents getting to defend against all 3 attacks.

Well, you maximum is 2 defences...though you could say a Full Total Defence may give you one extra reaction

You forgot to cough, gran_risa.gif

And I have been enlightened. Thank you... I need to stop reading the Horus Heresy now.

TeeHee, My (version 1) WHFRP Assassin has the ability to avoid up to FIVE attacks a round....sort of.

Parry works slightly different (instead of negating the attack out right it negates D6 damage, which could lead to the attack being negated or atleast the damge of the attack)

But with 4 attacks, giving him 4 chances to parry and dodge blow (on I 70) he laughs at the poultry combat ability of these future fighters only avoiding three attacks.

But then he probably isn't the best example, he can also (amongst other things) regenerate. Long story, basically he is very lucky Karl Franz is on his side (or should that be that Karl Franz is lucky the assassin is on his side mwahaha demonio.gif )

umm... *cough?*

Back to topic at hand, if the players had the correct skills I have no gripe with them trying to avoid three attacks a round.

If they tried to use those skills to avoid one attack three times, that would be a very different matter. I would be forced to remind them why the books are hardback gui%C3%B1o.gif

Can you catch TB over the internet now?

Fortunately it's a rare character type that can actually have step aside and wall of steel and even then at very high level. At that point they are welcome to it, they are going to need it.

Cough, cough
