Range 1 Attack Die Bonus

By gdboling, in X-Wing

I tried google and searching this forum and I'm sure the question has come up, but can't seem to find it. If primary weapon uses 3 dice already, can you get a 4th for the range 1 bonus? We (me and my kids) have been playing with 3 max. But thought I'd ask.

Side but related question: is there a FAQ for this game online somewhere with this kinds of simple Q&A's?

Thanks

Yes you always get +1 attack dice.

The same is true at range 3. the defender gets +1 defense dice.

No max. If you have an x-wing (3) at range 1 (+1), supported by Jan Ors, you can roll 5 dice. If its Wedge you can roll 5 AND subtract a defense die from your opponent. It wouldn't be fair for a TIE to get a range 1 bonus but not an X-wing.

Yes, attacking with primary weapons at range one lets you add a fourth die is your initial value is three. That's one of the reasons most players advocate getting a second core set if you are serious about getting into the game.

As to the FAQ, yes there is one available here on the FFG site here:

ETA: Well when I started to reply no one else had. It took me too long to find the link to the FAQ.

Then throw on expose and wedge could be rolling 6 attack dice!

Super. Thanks for the answers folks!

Exactly, you can throw on some sick combinations. Just remember that - find the math elsewhere - it's always best if you can support your dice with a focus and/or target lock or something similar. More dice is never bad, but you'll land hits more *consistently* with, say, 3 'supported' dice than 4 unmodified ones.

At 4 attack dice, adding a focus is the same as adding 2 more dice (excluding the increased chances for a crit)

I wasn't arguing that - of course, more, MODIFIED dice is always going to be best. I was just clarifying that its not always possible to have extra dice, focus, AND target lock, or similar substitutes. And while, as an example, 4 dice looks sexier than 3, it won't necessarily be, IF the 3 dice has the support of a focus and/or TL, where the 4 dice does not. If you can swing both, or all three, excellent.
