Some starting equipment seems a bit odd

I'm all for more options and it's relatively simple to do it. When we say "he's a guardsman", there is always the question of what kind of guardsman? There are medics, heavy weapons specialists, demolition specialists, pilots, vehicle operators, scouts, snipers, and that doesn't even include certain "named" veteran regiments that are notorious for their reputation such as the Cadian Shock Troops, Catachan Jungle Fighters, Death Korps of Krieg, and Maccabian Janissaries just to name a few. All of those elite regiments would certainly start with different gear.

For a start it's nothing that can't be worked out with your GM if he/she is in any way reasonable or inclined to act like an adult. Want an elysian? Work it out to start with the lasgun "compacted". It's doubtful he'd have a gravechute at all times. Want a catachan? Make a feral worlder, work your stats maybe a little stealthy and work out starting with a machete equivalent.

That's true! It's not that hard nor is it a hassle. For me, If they did add starting gear options, I would vote for each role as having a few no brainer items associated with their role and a short list of extra items to choose from.

Exactly. While I get most the ideas being bandied around here, it's really nothing that can't be solved by just brainstorming with your GM. End of the day, it's an rp and you shouldn't be working against each other anyway. You don't NEED an autocannon as a starter item to fit your cannon, but if you wanted a chainsmoking priest it's not like any reasonable GM is going to say no to your character getting Lho sticks as a starter item. Hell the starter equipment in general personally is best viewed as a "guideline" more than anything. If you have a specific guard regiment in mind that uses autoguns instead of lasguns, or as I believe was mentioned earlier in the thread a traveling pilgrim vs a fancy robed space-pope, not really seeing whats stopping you just swapping things around.

Why not a bottle of cheap amasec for everyone ?

Acolytes do really have enough reasons to drink, given the hororrs they face ;D

If your player asked you if it was okay for his alcoholic PTSD guardsman to start with half a bottle of the cheapest amasec he can find, would you say no?

And yes, if it really has to be spelled out, I suppose a sidebar could do the trick.
