Playing for less power

By AJHawes, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi everyone

I picked up the AGOT LCG this weekend and thoroughly enjoy it. However one thing I have noticed is the games can be pretty long. That's fine most of the time but I was wondering if there are any alternative rules to reduce the amount of power you play for in order to make the game quicker?

Long epic games are fine, but I'm hoping there is a format where you can just pick it up and play a short game when you haven't got much time.

Cheers in advance!

well, there are plenty of deck options that claim power faster, and, therefore, make the game last less time.

There are also the "Treaty" agendas that make the opponent only need 10 power if they are not running a "Treaty" agenda.

Alternatively, you could simply make an agreement at the beginning of the game that you are playing to less power than normally required.

There aren't really any official rules variants where less power is required for a one-on-one game.

It's important to note that games go quicker with a larger card pool (ie. more refined decks than those found in the core set). Another note is that the decks in the core set are meant for melee (3-4 players) games and will be even slower and less suited for joust (2 players). As you buy the expansions and your play group starts to make their own decks, you will notice that games are quicker and the decks are more focused.

While all of this is true. If you are simply playing casually and have no intention of playing competitively... House Rules are always an option. When I played casually, we would just put a time limit on the game and whoever had the most power at the time limit won.

We invented a "speed GoT" format as a side event for a regional some years ago:

  1. 40 card minimum deck size, 5 card plot deck.
  2. Limit 1 copy of any card in the deck by title (including plots that say you can have 2 copies).
  3. Game is over at the end of Round 3.
  4. Winner is determined by whomever is closest to their win condition at that time.

Limit 1 copy of any card in the deck by title (including plots that say you can have 2 copies).

Does this also include reducers such as the Seas? I'd imagine that you'd want to have all 3 seas in there if the game is only going three rounds, being the quickest way to get characters in (and not having to worry about long term repeatable reducers)

I'd suggest sticking to Joust games until you know the rules and card pool better. Melee games are inherently slow for new players, what with so many cards on the table to keep track of (not to mention the natural tendency for new players to be afraid to play Valar Morghulis). Once you have a better handle on the rules and cards, your games will go a lot faster.

Also, the Core set decks are woefully inconsistent. I'd also recommend using Darksbane's 2 Core Set Decks . My group found them much better when we were learning the game back when.

Both are better options IM(NS)HO than house ruling the game.
