KublaCon

By 9thimmortal, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Congrats! Hoepfully the first of many Regionals to come.

So, it turns out that the only time I might be free is Saturday afternoon. It looks like that would be good timing to at least watch the LCG tourney and meet some people.

Does anyone know a way to get a one-day pass that's cheaper than the full $45-50 registration?

The one-day registration should be cheaper than that - still not great, but better. Just checked it out. It is $30 at the door...would have been cheaper 16 days ago :)

Thanks. Was that on the web site somewhere? I looked but didn't find it.

Thanks for the help.

Here you go:

www.kublacon.com/Prereg.html

Somewhere in the middle there it says on-site 1 day badges are $30.

Come hang out. You'll have a blast.

Well, would you look at that! Thanks for the tip. I used the "registration" sidebar on the web page, and got a different page instead: www.kbgames.com/KublaCatalog.html.

Do you know what the parking availability is like? The web page says "The Hyatt has parking for over 800 vehicles- the most we've ever had." I don't know how to interpret that: It could be either "We've never had more than 800 cars, and the Hyatt has more room than that, so don't worry" or it could be "We've reserved 800 parking spots, which is more than we've ever reserved before (but if you're the 801st car, you're out of luck)."

I never have driven, so take this with a grain of salt - but I have also never heard of any parking issues...although I think it might cost?

Seems like you could park across the street as well (movie theater that went out of business), but maybe they check/ticket?

From what I remember the hotel has a parking lot, but you have to pay. When I was there, we just parked in the movie theatre parking lot across the street and worried about getting towed everyday. It never happened, but I'm pretty sure they didn't want us parking there.

Just a reminder to all planning on attending Kublacon:

If you are planning on playing in the melee on Sunday, please bring an LCG deck with you as well as your standard deck.

As of now the format is still standard. But, if anyone new shows up on Saturday for the joust, and has interest in playing on Sunday, but only has LCG cards, we will switch to LCG for them. I want to do everything possible to encourage anyone new to play with us.

I'm fired up! Kubla!!!

So remind me what exactly "Standard" means again!?!?! Is it ITE and forward? Are there build restrictions (only one copy of a card per deck)? Oh and if the newest Chapter pack is out by then will it be legal?

I need answers!

Standard = ITE+ (No Jaqen or Gathering Storm, but Pyromancer's Cache is in.) It's not Highlander, so 3 copies per card.

Unless the next CP is released tomorrow, it will not be legal.

You can look the event up on the Kublacon site, but it just says the same thing there.

I missed that if its in the FAQ... but Gathering Storm is banned in "standard"?

Well, there is no FAQ for "Standard". It isn't a supported format, so I can do whatever I want (ie. ban Jaqen) gran_risa.gif.

Seriously though, when there was a "standard" format The Gathering Storm was banned in Melee.

Hopefully, there will be a ton of new players, and we'll end up playing LCG anyway. That would be the best case senario.

Ah, ok. That's what I was asking. I know there isn't really a standard OP supported format anymore... but we like to play a lot of our games replicating what was last standard legal in terms of rulings, and I hadn't ever been aware that Gathering Storm was banned for melee games. I've got the last updated version of the FAQ/errata PDF, but hadn't noticed that bit in there.

Thanks DJ.

Yeah, Gathering was creating all sorts of issues with timing and the such - I think Outmanuever was banned as well.

Getting excited! I will be leaving in a week and a few hours! :)

All right! I am off in about three hours...sounds like I will see a good amount of friends, old and new. Might even have a drink or two! :)

Talk to everyone tomorrow or Saturday.

Have a great time! Should be fun weekend of AGoT all around.

<shaves head and grows out the Fu Manchu>KUUUBBBBBBBLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!</>

Have a great time Matt, wish I was sharing the room again... save for that creepy Bruno guy's antics. That Mathlete creeps me out.

Tell the boys "hiyas" for me, and we'll call to check on you from Ktom's place Sunday... we'll only try and pretend to be Kubla-East.

The excitement is killing me!!!

Too bad I still have 3 hrs until my wife gets home to watch the kiddos, and then another 8 hrs car drive through LA on a three day weekend... Wow... That just sucked the excitment out of me!

But I'll be stoked once I get though LA!!! Kubla!!!!

Just a quick note:

First - thanks to everyone who helped out and made it to Kubla to play! As always, I had a blast - spending the time with friends trumps even the love I have for the game.

Obviously, the choices that were made in the last year, while probably good for the game (i.e. the game is still here), were bad for competative play...and if anywhere in the world got hit the most, it was Cali. Sacremento - maybe the largest meta in the country - is basically gone, and LA seems to be as well.

So, attendance was disappointing, but not surprising. The highest # we had, I think, was 10 (or 12?) for the cube draft, in that old Sactown players were willing to stop their other gaming adventures and come back to play aGoT.

LCG Joust had 6 (including a new player- thanks for stopping by Darren!), and was won by Kevin AGAIN (Kevdawg I believe on the boards) = his third straight Kubla win, and tying me for most Joust wins at Kubla over the years (it has been awhile since my last one... :) ). I got second, and Jesse (Wyndwalker) third. However, the deck was Deathjester's Targ build in that Kevin brought a Standard deck. :) To be honest, Targ is probably the best house right now for a player like Kevin (who moved to Vegas to play poker for a living), so it worked out nicely.

The cube draft was also won by Kevin, with Matt (what is his board name - Wolf something...I am already starting to forget Sactown board names which is crazy) in 2nd and the Kingg21 (Brooks) third. I was disappointed to not play, but I didn't want an odd number. However, to make people in one draft pool happy - Kevin and Matt were in one pod that had all the newer players... :) Kevin's deck seriously was crazy, as was Matt's (Blackfish with Lightbringer on multiple occasions). It was a ton of fun to see my cube used, and I will certainly be running a side event at GenCon if people are interested.

The Standard Melee was won by Chaos' wife with Bara rush. Kevin was second (Lanni Military plots and other stuff), and Chaos third (infamy deck). I ran a Joust standard deck (GJ Watery Shrine deck) and got fourth as a spoiler... :) As always with melee I had a bit of fun (as I always should playing games with friends!), but remembered the reasons I am not a big fan... :)

I certainly hope the state of the competative game comes back soon, but it probably will take awhile. We did have some interested people stop by, mainly people who only had the core set and really consider it a board game. Shadows I am excited for - the first set to be designed stand alone, and the GJ expansion I am even more. We had probably 20-22 unique players in the three events for different reasons, but only probably 6 came to Kubla specifically for Thrones.

Regardless I had a great time - be it going undefeated in Standard jousts so wondering what could have been, or staying up until 4am swapping stories with the likes of Erwo, Kingg21, Wyndwalker, and all the rest of the crew. Special thanks as well to FFG for supporting as much as they possibly could, and Deathjester for running the Melee and basically helping me out a ton.

See people either at the Pacific NW Regionals in July, or GenCon!

Matt/rings.

Rings -- Thank you for hosting this year! I wish I could have been there for the cube draft and joust events because they sound like they were quite the success (even with the shallow attendance). But on the up side, missing the Kubla joust and draft this year gave me that extra push to make the trip up to Seattle for the NW Regional and I am really looking forward to it. gran_risa.gif

Deathjester -- Thank you for running the Melee! I was glad that the one day I was able to attend Kubla, there was a Thrones event to play...however I hope we all learned a valuable lesson: "Even if attendance is expected to be down, don't bribe your wife/girlfriend to play to boost the numbers because it just may backfire and you'll never be allowed to forget who brought home the title." Although I will take credit for the deck building but as we've all know, many times (and certainly in this case) it isn't the vehicle but the driver that makes the difference.

Congrats to Kevdawg for his 3rd straight victory in the Joust! Well done Ser.

To all those who wanted to be at Kubla but were not able to attend for one reason or another, fear not, you have been granted a second tournament opportunity: CALICON is on the horizon. Stay tuned...

no report?

Winning LCG decklist by chance?

Having not played in a while, my brain was much too busy trying to remember how to play the game well to think about anything else going on. All I remember is that Toll Gate is useless against rings, or any of the decks he builds. Unfortunately, they accounted for 50% of the decks in the joust!

As for a deck list, trust me when I say Kevin was the best piece to that deck.

rings - You were the catalyst to making the whole thing happen. Thank you for your efforts and hospitality. The cube draft was the Thrones hi-lite of the weekend.

cha0s and wife - Buying 2 one day passes just to come support a friend for a couple of hours was over the top. Thank you buddy. You rock.

arma virumque - It was a pleasure meeting you. I'm sorry we didn't get some games in, but hopefully we'll see eachother at Calicon.

kevdawg - It was good to see you. Thanks for hanging out and making my deck look good.

Wyndwalker - Thanks for getting rid of The Kingg's girlfriend durring Robo Rally gran_risa.gif and for putting up with that crappy Bara deck I gave you for melee.

The rest of the STM - It was awesome hanging out with you guys as always.

I'll post a list for the deck Kevin played tomorrow.
