How many Force Dice?

By Rob.DavisRGG, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I'm just looking into the Force Sensitive Exile... As none of my players were force users I took my time. Question is... Am I missing something or is "2" the limit on Force Rating? You get 1 for taking the specialization and after 75 points you can bump it up by +1. Is that it?

That is correct, although you could also take the new one in the AoR beta to get to three by using the talent tree.

Ok thanks!

Be thankful. With only a single force die in each dice blister pack you don't want people with high Force ratings

Yeah, right now the cap is 3 (if you have both EotE and the AoR Beta) and are sticking to official materials.

There are a few fan supplements that pretty much make the sky the limit in terms of Force Rating if you're willing to spend the XP to buy enough new specializations.

Saying that, I'm firmly of the opinion that for most EotE (or AoR) games, you don't really need to have a Force-user go beyond Force Rating 3. From the system stress tests I did during the EotE Beta using some homebrew material, FR 3 is usually plenty to activate a base power and at least one upgrade without having to flip a Destiny Point and suffer some strain. Obviously those odds drop if you've got one or more Ongoing Effects in play (such as both the defensive & offensive upgrades for Sense), but that also plays into the fact that we didn't see Luke do much in the way of Force stuff during his fight scenes in the trilogy (a quick bit of telekinesis to retrieve his lightsaber in ESB and a Force Leap to get out of the carbon freezing pit, then a Force Leap in RotJ to reach the catwalk and put space between him and Vader), and I figure he was at best FR4 by the time of his final duel with Vader in RotJ (maybe even just FR3).

I have 3 sets and the dice app. The great thing about the app is you can use as many as needed for a roll. However I don't see me needing more than 3.

I only have two sets and the dice app. I don't see me buying another set of dice as the two sets seems to cover most of our needs (for now) and any time I need more we can use the app (or roll what we have, note the results and roll the rest). Love the system but my FLGS doesn't carry the dice so I have to buy from the states and pay for shipping which makes them too expensive to justify another set when I have the app

I was thinking about the number of dice needed for the game overall. Assuming that 1) you buy one straight set, 2) there are boxed sets for every game, by the time you get to F&D, that's four full sets, which should be enough to cover most eventualities.

Yeah if there's a boxed set for the other core books I will by those as relatively speaking I will be getting more bang for the buck

I just bought my 5th set and I doubt I'm done. Do I need more? Probably not, but I don't need 20 d20s either but I have them.

If they weren't costing me close to $30 a set with shipping I'd get more too. Like you I have a giant bag of dice and probably have close to 30 dice sets from those tunes of polyhedral sets. But $30 is hard to justify

Thirty dollars?!? Where are you, the Moon? If you're in the US with Amazon Prime, less than 12 dollars. Without Prime, 12 and a few pennies.

$9.99 here. If you order$100.00 or more they have free shipping. But that is in the U.S.

I am in the second class country of Canada. I ordered from FFG store and it was $14 plus $12 shipping plus some tax so it was around $28. I got the Beginner set from a Canadian website for about the same. Haven't found a Canadian store selling the dice.

Edit: looks like it would cost me about $21 from Amazon.com but I don't want to reward them for not selling the same products on amazon.ca

Likewise from coolstuff the shipping is about $10 and I just have an issue paying more for shipping than the actual product.

I have two sets and the app for my phone so that will work for now until my FLGS actually gets some dice. Hopefully there are beginner sets for the other core books and they have dice too

Sounds to me like someone has Polyhedral Dice addiction as an Obligation!

Edit: btw I have the same affliction lol

Not as bad as some gamers I know but yeah. :)

Some folks say "you can never have too many dice!"

I say that when you've got so many dice that you can fill a bean-bag chair, or need an entire closet to house your collection... then you might be approaching the point of "too many."

Well I haven't reached that point yet.

How much XP is needed to get all 3 FR though?

20 to get Exile

95 for +1 (5+10+15+20+20+25)

30 to get Emergent

?? for +1 to equal 3?

75 XP from Emergent, as it's a straight shot from Row 1 to Row 5.

So total cost would be 220 XP assuming zero detours to pick up other talents, Force Powers, or skill ranks.

And here I am, thinking of buying a 4th and 5th Dice-Set, because I'm planning a Master Level Oneshot with my Players where some of the Characters might well have Force Rating 5 xD

Is Force Rating 5 the pre-requisite to unlocking the Necromancy Force Power tree? Because this is some high-level thread resurrection - you had me reading through the first few posts wondering why nobody was mentioning the F&D specs.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of that going around lately.

Of the FFG dice the force dice is the easier to use a standard dice to represent.

1 - give 2 dark side point

2-7 - gives 1 dark side point

8 &9 - give 1 light side point

10-12 - give 2 light side points.

If you go with that you can skip buying more dice, but everyone wants more dice.
