Tractor 6 Question

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The Heavy Tractor Beam has Tractor 6, meaning the difficulty of the Piloting (Space) check to escape from it is six purple dice. Does this also mean it requires spending a destiny point to even make the attempt?

I would start upgrading to challenge die, after 4 or 5 dice.

Why would you need to spend a destiny point to try? Even if you have just one or two ability dice you always have a chance of succeeding since the P have blank sides so, you could roll net successes and the tractor gets net threat. So, you get away, but suffer for it.

A difficulty of 6 goes beyond a Formidable Task, and thus might pass into the territory of being an Impossible Task. If this is the case, then it requires a Destiny Point just to attempt the Task. I'm curious if this is an intended effect of the Heavy Tractor Beam having Tractor 6. If it had Tractor 5 it would be quite strong without crossing into the realm of exceeding the standard limits of the system.

would changing the roll to incorporate shooting at the tractor beam do anything? if i do remember correctly, firing a missile or proton torpedo down the tractor beam with sufficient space/good maneuvering could help you break free.

You could use Advantages on the Gunnery roll to gain Boost dice, and a Triumph might allow you to escape or damage/destroy the tractor beam.

However, that doesn't change the question as to whether the Heavy Tractor Beam should really have Tractor 6. I'm leaning towards giving it Tractor 5 but increasing it to Range [Medium] to compensate.

My choice would be to upgrade one of the Difficulty dice to a Challenge die and let them roll.

I'd go with this too.

I'd treat as just 6 purple dice, going by the standard rules on tractor beams as described in the book. With that many purple, the odds are stacked enough against the pilot of the trapped ship. unless they happen to be really freaking awesome at Piloting (Space).

Can a tractor beam on a Nebulon-B frigate be used against another Nebulon-B frigate or a capital ship of similar scale?

That would be the standard rules, but any GM could apply another rules in order to adjusto to her adventure, couldn't she?

Do the rules say you an increase in difficulty for a Formidable Task actually becomes Impossible?

I was under the impression that the rule for setting difficulty only said that some tasks are impossible, therefore no dice pool is formed at all, not that it said Formidable increased to impossible.

Having a stat of 6 wouldnt make it so that every opposed test using that stat is now Impossible, so I think the Tractor would work the same way.

You're quoting something 5 years old. In the time since, this has been addressed.

Question came up before , devs answered with 6 purple, of courwe they may have revised since.
