Seeking clarity on speed 3 ships moving to long range
This has been bothering me since the beginning of the Beta book. I hope it is addressed in a future hypothetical official FAQ document.
It really depends on what the other ship is doing. If ship A is stationary (or not trying to keep distance) and ship B is trying to close I would use the same rules as character movement bands. 1 maneuver between close, short, medium, 2 maneuvers between medium, long, extreme.
If ship A is trying to move away or keep distance its an opposed skill check with either setback or boost die for the difference in speed and who is making the roll.
I.e. ship A (speed 5) is trying to close the range of ship B (speed 3) who is trying to keep distance. Pilot of Ship A who make an opposed roll with 2 boost die from the 2 higher speed.
But, this is why we use miniatures and the ship speed is the number of squares the ship can move.
Edited by archon007This is how I try and make it easy for my guys. This is zoomed out so you can see the whole thing.

S = Speed of ship
M = Maneuvers required to get to that Range Band.

In these cases I'd use the chase mechanic - a full page "sidebar" in the starship and vehicles chapter. Or at least a variant of it.
