Useful map of Tatooine

That's super cool! Thanks for sharing!

Wow! Luke traveled 105 miles (as the crow flies) to get to Old Ben's hut? Kenobi sure picked a remote location to keep an eye on the boy.

That's only about a 40 minute drive in Luke's Landspeeder.

And the dude is a Jedi. And it isn't like they don't have telephones.

I would have loved to have watched a scene where Aunt Beru gets Mable on the line to connect her to Old Man Kenobi to tell him to keep his pet Galoomp out of her moisture vaporators.

How else would people order moonshine from his still!

He probably relied more on his Force awareness to provide him with sufficient warning if something bad was going to happen to Luke. And once Owen Lars made it clear that he didn't want Old Ben to have any influence on Luke's upbringing (no **** fool idealistic crusades, thank you very much).

if Ben needed to get there in a hurry, it's possible that early on he had a riding beast such as an eopie to make use of, and as Luke got older his visits to check up on the boy became less and less frequent.

I've always wondered what Obi-Wan did to make such a profound transition in Owen Lars' mind from "that nice Jedi" in Revenge of the Sith to "Ben's just a crazy old man, stay away from him" in A New Hope. Makes me think there was an incident somewhere around the 10 year mark involving the middle of the night, a lot of alcohol and some Banthas.

Bad writing? :-)

Not sure there was much in ROTS to show that Owen approved of Kenobi...we only know that he accepted the responsibility for raising Luke. Family duty aside, maybe part of the reason was that he didn't approve of Obi-Wan.

That's my line of thinking. Owen is very much the simple "man of the land" type of person, not unlike his father Clegg Lars it would seem. I'm sure Obi-Wan gave them the low-down on who Luke's parents were, and Owen may have decided it was in Luke's best interest if he was shielded from the harsh truth for as long as possible. As Dumbledore showed in Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix, after a while it gets easier and easier to hide those harsh truths from the ones you've come to love, to the point you don't want to every admit those truths.

Obi-Wan, wanting to keep a low profile and not cause any undue hassles, accepted Owen's decision and hung back, until such a time as Luke was ready and the Force provided a reason for Anakin's son to seek out the old Jedi. Though I doubt he ever expected it'd take the form of a runaway droid carrying stolen plans...

In my mind, Owen didn't disliked Obi-Wan. He just tried to discourage Luke from seeking that "crazy old man".

That's what I'm thinking too. I never got the impression Owen had anything against Obi-Wan as a person. He was more worried about Luke learning about his (Obi-Wan's) true background and deciding to go out into the galaxy himself. Speaking ill of Obi-Wan was just a way to discourage Luke from spending time with him.

Oh, and on a slightly different note: Does anyone know where that map came from originally?

It's from one of those big Star Wars essentials books. It has some excellent maps of Tatooine, Mos Eisley, Luke's home, and Ben's home.

Eta: Oops no it's one of the "complete" guides. This one.

I agree. The Owen/Obi-Wan feud feels largely like an invented thing, designed by Owen to keep Luke out of harm's way. What's more, Obi-Wan almost certainly understands this, and hasn't felt the need to interfere because it's been largely effective. Had Luke actually enrolled in the Academy, Obi-Wan would almost certainly have stepped in, with Owen continuing to act all cranky about Obi-Wan's interference, to further entice Luke into listening to the 'old wizard'.
