Neighborhood Battle

By dsoline, in X-Wing Battle Reports

My son (7)and I discovered the game last week at Gen Con. Since then we have been playing and I have researched more about this fun game. We found out our neighbors down the street whom the kids are friends also play X Wing. His dad has the game and some upgrades but no one to play with. We had the first of many battles today that had some great moments but our 7 and 9 year olds sat for about 2 hours. Pretty impressive for a non video game and was why we chose X Wing. So proud of my son as he hung in there with some good strategy as Darth Vader.

Awesome! Welcome to the game, glad you have someone near to play against!

That's cool about having some neighbors into the same game. My son just started school and we found his teacher and principal are both into x-wing. But I don't think we will get any games in together, that would be a bit to strange.

NONSENSE!

The Principal had his ships on the shelf in his office. That is how the topic came up, then he let us know about the teacher. The muddy the water further, my wife is his boss.

Perfect....seems like you have an 'in'. :-)

It wouldn't be very appropriate.

besides our x-wing group has grown from 3 regulars to about 9 or more.

It's totally appropriate at a family game night or at a local gaming sotry but probably not over every weekend at each others homes for battles!

My best friend's 7 yr old is also way into it. He pretty much only wants to play Luke and a YT build but will really really go at it with me for 1-2 hours before giving up or getting distracted. It's that kind of game: simple enough that a kid can be good at it with focused practice (perhaps obsessively so) and still enjoyable by us older fans. He hasn't beat me yet but I bet if he had a little more endurance/resilience a few of the games he gave up he probably would have had me.

I love it. I will loveingly put some of the minis on my shelves at school... along with every type of ship I can make out of 2-3 binder clips. I think at one time we counted 8... I'll get back to you on those #'s.

My son doesn't quite grasp the simple mechanics and structure of the game. He is 5 though. He loves Star Wars and has a small fleet already (1x Xwing, 2x Ywing, 1 Falcon; 2x TIE, 1x Adv. TIE, 1x TIE Int., 1x Firespray, and a Hasbro Star Destroyer) and takes good care of them. Hopefully in a few years I will have a mini-opponent.

Just do a dice battle, no maneuvers. I do that with my 6 year old daughter. Rolling the dice gets to the meat of the game which kids get.

My kids have been around dice their whole life. I play Strat-O-Matic baseball and they love playing "baseball dice". They like it so much when we go to the local game store, they buy 1 die for their collection. When your son buys his 1st d20 it is a proud moment ;)

I'm trying to break him of the habit of when dealing damage cards he takes tge cards from his ships and gives them to you. Lol I'd like to get away with that in a game!

My 6-yr old loves to play X-wing. At first I helped her choose her moves, but after playing a few games, she is getting the hang of it. So far we haven't introduced any pilots with special abilities- just vanilla pilots. My 3-yr old helps me roll the dice. :)

Vanilla is the way to go. The 7 yr old insists on Luke with R2 but after that its whatever is easy. I gave him Chewie once because that's an easy one to help him with. I often play my fringe squads against him just for fun and get some practice piloting. Kids gonna beat me in the next few games; I'm sure of it
