Gencon X-wing Winner

By rdobyns, in X-Wing

Does anyone know the winning Gencon squad or have a link to it? I can't seem to find it.

Thanks

All i know is , it was a Tie swarm

4 academy pilots, Howlrunner, Backstabber and Dark Curse.

The info is in Hothie's report from Gencon in Battle Reports. The 2nd place, 3 x wing build, is in there as well.

Is that pretty much the top tier list these days? I don't follow tourney stuff much, but I always hear that the Tie swarm is pretty much where it is at.

Did he leave it at 98 points to keep initiative?

Yes I did.

Someone get that man a cookie.

I don't think there is a top tier list atm. Although some lists are easier than others to be good with, and tie swarms are pretty common, usually Tie swarms and easy to run don't go together in a sentence. That said, the guy who won the Gen Con national tourney spent something like 20 hrs flying his Tie swarm and from what I heard, it was a symphony in motion every time he played it.

While a swarm did win Nationals and the May 4th event, I wouldn't say it's dominant, yet. It may appear more frequently due to these high profile wins but I think there were only 2 swarms in the top 16 and Jacob almost didn't make the final cut- I think he went 3-2 in the swiss pairings and might have been the only 3-2 record in the cut to 16. He was great at flying his squad and was a fun to play against (lost to him in the second swiss pairing). I am curious as to what 2 lists beat him.

You don't usually see a lot of TIE swarms at tournies this season. They do require more practice to fly them well. But the folks who do bring them to tournies are the ones who have practice flying them, so those players tend to place pretty well. As always, its the combination of player and list. There is no magic list that wins by itself.

I never thought there was an "it" list. I think it is more being curious than anything else. It's good to hear that there is no dominant list, unlike other miniature games out there (and not just 40k is included in that). I've got enough Tie fighters to try the swarm out, but I am a Rebel at heart. More specifically, an A-Wing guy. I played it on the X-Wing games far too often.

Thats the beauty of the x-wing game. there no sure win list. love it

While there isn't a dominant list there are dominant ships. Correct me if I'm wrong but Y-wings, A-wings, TIE Adv, or TIE IN didnt make anyones list on the top 8. The Tie fighter appereared in 5 of the eight lists.

Do you have a link to Hothie's battle report?

Heres Hothie's battle report. I think they talked about the top to lists starting on page 3 but reading through the whole thing is worth while.

I think this the fact that there are dominant ships is true to some degree but most ships are fairly well balanced in my opinion, maybe just not ideal to spam. Hothie's worlds list last year included Vader did it not? Just because a ship didn't make it into the top 8 in one tournament doesn't make it bad (nor does a ship making is into the top 8 make it good). I think most of it just has to do with what is in vogue at any given time.

Not only that, but its also gen con, which has a ton going on. Some people (like me) dropped early due to conflicting events due to the way the North American Championship event was listed in the event book (supposed to finish by 6pm. In actuality, it finished around 3am). Also, there are attendance figures to take into account - almost every imperial list had Tie Fighters in it, so of course the Tie Fighter is going to be all over in the finals. I saw very few A-Wings and Y-Wings in the rebel lists, so its also very unlikely they will make it into the finals as well. Finally, a big dice swing can make all the difference in the world in one game which can alter someone getting into the finals - one of the rare lists can get knocked out at no fault other than dice.

Sorry I thought we were talking within the contex of the 2013 gencon. I never mentioned anything about any ship being imbalaced. I guess what I should have said was over represented instead of dominant.

You make it sound like the final 8 was all random. When you say if its an Imperial list of course its gonna have TIE fighters in it only further establishes my point. So why does every imperial list run atleast one TIE fighter? Simple, Howlrunner.

Tell me about it with the dice. I've been watching Miniwargaming's battle reports, and Matt seems to have ungodly swings of luck with those dice.

It's good to hear that there is no dominant list, unlike other miniature games out there (and not just 40k is included in that).

I've generally found that people tend to get tunnel vision when it comes to a game's meta. The people who cried about lists in 40k never seemed to do well in actual competitive play and were generally flat out wrong. And while you say there isn't a dominant list in this game, you'll find there are several archetypes that get played quite often and tend to do very well, for instance, tie swarm winning gencon and world's.

Lol fair enough I was just throwing in my two cents.

I will admit that there is a quality of quantity in my opinion, when it comes to that Tie list. There definitely seem to be auto includes (Fel, Mauler Mithel, or Howlrunner), and the Ties are so cheap too. It is cinematic, in its own right. One thing I can say is that I haven't seen anyone crying foul over it. Seen that in some other games, and it always got a bit repetitive.

Wedge-centric x-wing lists, double YT-1300 lists, and double Firespray lists were also fairly common.

Its not completely random, but if 80% of imperial lists have an Academy Pilot in them (I'd say the Academy Pilot is the most taken Imperial ship, even more than howlrunner) then I'd say 5-6 of the top 16 lists should have a tie fighter. If only 1 list of the tournament field is running multiple A-Wings, its no surprise if it doesn't make it into the top 16 even if the most skilled player is running that list (a bad swing of dice can take down a skilled player faster than anything).

These kind of things also rely on the Meta, If their are a low amount of crews that counter your build you will do better. Even if a build isn't OP. Also if you have 1 person that is amazing with a list you can get a lot of people emulating it.

I've seen these kind of things in the tournament scene all the time. One year you will get everyone running a Space Wolf build, then someone will turn up with a hard counter and destroy all comers, next time people won't run Space Wolves. Space Wolves are still the same as before but because there are hard counters that are being run it's no longer good at tournaments, a bit down the line most people will no longer be playing Space Wolves, so the number of people running the counter will diminish and suddenly the list is viable again and a few people will run it.

The fact that a lot of a people are running a list doesn't necessary mean it's OP.
