throwing combat knife

m just wondering is it possible to throw a combat knife

Sure it is. Range is Short, stats as per regular knife, and use Ranged (light) to hit.

Note that what Krieger is suggesting is not in the Core rules, but is very sensible. I've suggested before that if throwing a Combat Knife I would apply a Setback die since it is not made for throwing. If throwing a Throwing Knife (also not in Core), it wouldn't have such a penalty, but perhaps have a Setback die when used in Melee.

I would have used Athletics or Coordination instead.

I would lean that way too if not for grenades using Ranged(light) as well. I suppose a case could be made for needing more finesse than with a grenade.

What I used both a roll for melee and ranged(light) in then added the setback but what if I was a force sensitive using move on the combat knife

I agree, I didn't think about that. I had the image of a throwing knife in my head. A weapon not made for throwing should have a setback die.

Not sure I agree with this interpretation. Those skill are more aimed at controlling your own body and doing physical feats, not throwing something accurately. Especially since Ranged (light) is also used for throwing grenades.

I'm pretty sure that would be a Discipline check combined with a power check, but someone with more insight into the Force skills would know better than I. I might allow damage bonuses for having multiple upgrades in Power.

Right you are, I forgot about that.

isn't this simply an improvised range weapon and thus uses those rules?

Where are the Improvised Weapon rules? I was looking for them the other day, and I couldn't find them.

Page 212. But, they all appear to be Improvised MELEE weapons since they all have a range of Engaged and all use Melee. That seems silly. One of the examples includes a Fist-Size Rock, or a Bottle. You can't throw that to Short range? Simply expanding the Small sized (only) Improvised weapons to include the ability to throw them to Short range using Ranged (Light) seems reasonable.

I think that when the writers put together the book they mostly thought of improvised weapons in melee terms. It's hardly a stretch for GMs to extrapolate those rules into throwing.

And on a separate note, while throwing a rock or bottle could indeed be seen as improvised weapons, a combat knife (even though not made specifically for throwing) is still a dedicated weapon. Better to add a setback die when throwing it, as Sturn suggested.

New attachment for a Spear or Combat Knife - Weighted for Throwing. Removes the 1 Setback die when throwing the weapon, but gives 1 Disadvantage when used in Melee.
