Solo play?

By mr.thomasschmidt, in X-Wing

Just wondered if anyone plays this solo? Is it possible? No biggie if not but would be awesome as I don't have a lot to play together with :)

I have had a day where I played myself.

Is good for mechanics/practice manuevring, but as always when playing both sides you know what is about to happen. It was fun to play, but problematic- you forget more abilities as you're trying to work both sides, and you always have a slight bias (mine was to see the imps win when they hadn't recently).

Lastly, when I play others, they will do things I would never think of (like a risky k turn or prioritise different targets), and that to me is the biggest deal breaker. The fun of such a game is not knowing what will happen next!

I can see that. Just wanted to see if it was somewhat doable as I'm probably going to play as much solo as 2 player. Thanks for the reply :)

I have done this a few time as well, as my kids are younger and lose interest and the closest place to play is an hour away and they only have X-wing on the first Tuesday night of the month. This is very helpful though in getting ideas for formations etc., if nothing else it allows you to get a strong sense of space and movements.

I've done it with a few other games. I I just went with the die rolls on both sides. Played the old WEG Battle of Hoth solo. It was fairly easy, after all the walker's have one move, and go with the dice roll.

Yeah, Solo is a good card. It's a fairly popular build. Look up references to HSF.

Oh, you weren't referring to that Solo ;)

I play with myself all the time! Sometimes I play Xwing solo too. I just think “what would I do if I didn't know what he was about to do” and try to be honest with myself. On the one hand of course you don't have the surprise of somebody doing things you wouldn't expect (although you can still do things you think would be unexpected, whilst working on the assumptions of what you would expect, if you follow me), but then you also get to see what it's like playing giants your own style of play. I find it a good way of testing out card combos.

edit: playing against, not playing giants!

Yeah this is a great way to work through new lists and get used to how the actions build and play out.

Completely agree. You have to make sure you're following the proper movement phase too.

Usually when I play against myself I always end up arguing...

I just played against meself last night! Heh, 4 A-wings vs. 4 Interceptors. Imps won by 1 shot. I like to do it on occasion for many of the reasons given above.

It can help you understand movements and space better (Moving in formation, or maneuvering around a dogfight).

it lets you try out different lists and see (in general) how they do against certain squads.

It can help you create new tactics to pull surprises on future opponents.

It helps you learn what starting formations you like, and which are most effective.

I find it to be helpful, though dull on occasion (but also intriguing and fun, nearly as often). But i think it shines in trying out different squads you normally wouldn't try. id et - 4 Tie advanced, or 4 a-wings, or such, and trying out different upgrades you normally wouldn't grab. Go for it, you might enjoy it

I play solo exclusively, in large part due to lack of interest nearby. The other part is that I'm terrible at playing competitively, and I get not much better playing only myself, so there's that vicious circle to contend with.

In most cases, I think, as pointed out above, you're going to find some mechanical benefit to it. It will help you learn some protocol and tricks and overall mechanic.

In my case [and this is probably the autism talking] I'm in this game almost exclusively for the cinematic and imaginative aspects. I'll follow the game through as close as I can to the rules, and I've played a handful of games with other people. But in my mind I experience a space battle; every time I look over a model—whether on the board, on display, or being detailed—it sets off my imagination. That alone is worth the investment for me.

I've managed to eliminate bias enough to make the lists worthwhile, pay attention to their strengths and weaknesses. Of course there's the lack of surprise, but my own thinking is so one-dimensional at times that I actually forget most of one side's dials by the time I've set the other side. Your mileage may vary.

I usually run practice games solo to prep for a tournament or a big event. Hothie had a long blog on Team Covenant that was a great example of what one can do with this game solo. It's mainly academic as you lose the biggest thing about this game - hidden movement information. BGG saw a user build a movement generator that several users thought brought solo play out of the academic and actually made for an engaging experience. Lastly, if you can't find local players, VASSAL is gaining a following and I'd highly recommend it for "real" game time.

Thanks guys. That settles it then. I'll defenitly get it. Gonna place an order later today. And great humor guys. I'm eager to become part of this forum :)

Glad to have you here, and please give us an updated post on your experience some time. Hopefully you find it rewarding and/or recruit some lackeys to join you.

Bear in mind it's a money sink! It's cost me around £450 so far, and I expect to spend another £120 to £150 on Wave 3! Awesome though :)

;):)

What I just ordered is 2 x core set and just 1 x Y wing. Would have gone for the extra X wing but it was sold out. So 6 TIEs, a X and an Y wing to begin with.

When I'm hooked I'll go in semi big time :)

I hear you. But I ain't planning to use that much...at first ;) I won't say never but I doubt that I'll be the kind of gamer that needs 4 of everything. I think I'd be happy with 2 of all and just 1 of each of the big ones. Besides, some from wave 1 is out of stock and while restocking I can save some money for a big time investment :)

But two core sets is four ties and two xwings, what you talkin' about foo'?

Solitaire play is a good way to learn the templates and maneuvers as others have suggested. While there's a player-base in my area for a long while I didn't have any regular opponents, and would practice-match against myself just to enjoy the game. Running 8 TIE fighters alone can give you some great experience with space traffic control and that many fighters.

Somewhere on Board game Geek's variant rules section I put up a rules set involving space mines which fire more or less autonomously at the closest targets. They could be useful in raid scenarios, since they're immobile and could guard targets to destroy. I tired them a few times and it seemed to work, just don't go overboard.

Good! GOOD! NOW, you will join the Dark Side of the Force... like..aherm..

WELCOME!

That's not a money sink for a collectible game.

But yeah. I can see the point of trying it out Solo to get a better idea of play set ups.

£450!! Have you been buying solid gold Y-wings? :o

I sometimes use this for solo play

I've used it too and it works qutie well. But he has a updated version out there, 1.5 It's a bit better then 1.4

I have what I consider to be a very nice collection.

8 TF's, 4 TI's, 2 TA's, 4 of each Reb ship, a Falcon and Slave 1. I've so far spent about $350... Which works out to be less then 300 pounds according to Google...

$350 is a fair amount of cash, but the bulk of that was me cashing in my 40k army on ebay.

To put it in prespective however, my 40k army was about the same cost, plus I had to assemble and paint them. I had a 1750 point space marine list, 1500-1750 is the standard point value. In X-Wing I can put 7 100 point lists on the table at the same time.

So while you can and I did spend a fair amount on X-Wing, it's by no means that expensive compared to other games.
