Frag Grenade Damage Type

By comradeda, in Game Mechanics

From my initial flicking over of the rules, Impact damage seems to feel more "right" in terms of description and effects than Energy for Frag Grenades. That is just me though. I do notice they have removed the fire bomb from DH, although I think Molotov style improvised weapons and incendiary grenades should be two separate categories.

Within those two, I think the differences should be:

"Fire Bomb" - Small AoE, high Burning condition due to actual "splashing liquids", cannot be used in a grenade launcher, cheap and buildable from promethium and amasec supplies.

Incendiary Grenade - larger AoE and initial damage, lower Burning condition

Both of these appropriate for setting and "Energy Damage grenades that are not good vs armour"

Anyway, those were my thoughts on that thing. Probably unnecessary granularity added.

I'd say that rending fits better on a frag grenade, as the main damage from one comes from the fragments of shrapnel it sends in all directions. Not the shockwave.

Well the "frag" bits act like bullets was my thinking, but sure. :P

I would probably have said rending in that flying shrapnel seems more like a cutting / shredding attack. Swords and knives are rending. But I wouldn't raise my eyebrows at Impact.

Energy is wrong though. I raised the same objection with Power weapons. They have an energy field, but it's an energy field focused to act like a blade's edge (with exception of powerfist, kind of). All the wounds I can imagine from a power weapon would be better suited by rending (including the powerfist). Energy, with it's burning and expectation of laser or plasma bolts, etc. just does not fit.

I emailed them about it. Frag is a good catch. (Well, you wouldn't actually want to catch one, but you know what I mean. ;) ).

I remember after getting a lot of armour, a Rogue Trader party was very unfazed by frag grenades, and would hold armed grenades in their hands when in melee with low level bad guys. We increased damage after that.

I've ruled that grenades cannot be used in melee. They may be thrown into or out of melee. Additionally, lobbing a grenade into the open where its AoE might catch more targets requires a Called Shot.

Well, they're not pistol weapons, so I suppose they can't be. But this was a roleplay + "I can tank the damage of this grenade". Afterwards, we ruled that holding on to a grenade while it explodes results in damage (as normal) and a lost hand/stuff.
