Roleplaying Online - Etiquette

By MosesofWar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello All - this is my first post (and coincidentally my first foray in to table top Roleplaying). I've been reading the boards for a couple of days and I haven't been able to find the answer to my question. My question deals with some online etiquette as, I've realized, most of my rolepalying will most likely be done over the internet (message boards, skype, etc.) and I'm not sure some of the standard operating procedures for online RPing. In addition, I'm yet to start the beginner adventure due to lack of people to play with.

1. I've had experienced with Message Board based RPs and the one's that involve active combat/rolls were handled by the GMs, is this typically the case with EotE? Is the GM responsible for NPC and PC rolls, or do PCs typically roll for themselves and let the GM know what their roll is? Obviously everyone is on the honor system, but I'm just trying to get a general consensus of what everyone is doing.

2. The reason I most likely will find myself playing online often, is due to having a full-time job and having booked weekends (family time/things to do around the house). For players in my similar situation, what have you done to be able to get a little bit of rolepalying time in? Does skype work? Does jumping on a Campaign message board style, where sessions are stretched over the day (I can get posts in every couple of hours in at work) work? I'm familiar with Message Board based RPs and feel like they easily fit into a busy schedule, but I'm not sure how the experience is in EotE.

Thanks for your input! I'm excited to start playing!

1. When playing a RPG it totally depends on the GM running the game in regards to how the dice are rolled. I have been playing for 32 years and have always rolled my own dice and as a GM expect the players to roll their own dice... There has also been a crop of new indie style games where the players roll all the dice and the GM is there to tell and adjudicate the story and the events. I would expect that any online game that you join will allow you to roll the dice on your own. If you can find a group that is running a game through roll20.net, there is the possibility that they have integrated an online dice rolling mechanic that you will be able to access.

2. In regards to time constraints. You should expect and set aside a good 2-4 hours of time to play an online live session with other players and also be prompt and on time when playing. I currently play an assortment of various games with friends in other countries and I like to be a bit early to the game to work out any technical issues and also be there to initiate the session. I like when people are on time or at least inform us if they will be late, it allows us to either B.S. or start without them while we wait.

RPG is one of the great hobbies where no matter where you go and who you run into, you will typically find a nice and friendly group of people to interact with. Message Boards aside ;)

I've been doing this for around 32 years and have been playing with the same crew for about 20-32 years (depending on who's available)... I have lasting friendships that all came about because we played RPG together, ones that span the globe at this point.

Welcome and have fun!

last night, I teamed up with a few folks from here and we played a game. First time we ever met.

We used Google Hangouts + d20 (it's a virtual tabletop app) + the EotE dice plugin for Google hangouts.

Everyone saw all the dice, we could voice chat, we could type chat, and we all saw maps and tokens on the screen. Google Hangouts is basically Skype but it launches in a webpage and you can add plugins to it.

I've been wanting to Table Top RP forever and hearing stories like this are even more motivating to get started! Only RPs I've experienced were on the Everquest RP server and Message Board RPs, but I don't think either touch the level of story that these table top games provide. Needless to say, I'm excited.

Where do you go to get his? This sounds like a great setup!

The GM put it together and sent out the link, so I don't know exactly how to set it up. There's some info in this thread:

Roll 20 is a great app. I am also a first time RPG'er I have run 4 successful sessions of EotE over the past month or so, with the help of Roll20. Poke around and you will figure it out.
