R2 isn't really a pilot either. He's more a navigator / mechanic.
There are a few places in the Clone Wars where R2-D2 shows to be a very reasonable pilot.

In the classic Star Wars movie C3P0 pilots a land speeder. So we do have onscreen evidence of some pilot skill.
