The Trifecta of Space Combat

By Studio Radd, in X-Wing

The FlightPath mechanics that X-Wing is based on is clearly fantastic for quick and easy space combat gameplay. It's being used for two of the biggest Sci-Fi settings in existence; Star Wars and Star Trek.

But there is one more epic Sci-Fi setting that would make for a phenomenal FlightPath game:

Babylon 5

For as much as that Star Trek game will likely be fun, lets face it, Babylon 5 had some of the most epic space battles in TV history. I would love to have a FlightPath game based on Babylon 5. Anyone else agree?

P.S.: You might be thinking, "but surely you can't be forgetting about Battlestar Galactica!" That might be cool, but there just isn't a sufficient variety of ships; Vipers versus Cylon Raiders would be fun, but it would be akin to only having X-Wings and Tie Fighters. Without options and variety the game would get boring quickly.

I would love to get the Robotech miniatures game but can only afford a one game habit right now so I will stick with X WING.

I was just watching B-5 last week, and thought about this exact thing. There are enough fighters, and medium ships to make it happen. I mean, I would kill to have a Starfury on the board and fly it around.

Didn't B5 have its own starship game at some point that was played on an open surface and measured rather than being played on a grid like SSB was? Although I've never seen any personally I know I've seen the ships for it online before.

The original B5 ship combat game was B5 Wars by Mongoose Games, which was played on a hex map much like Star Fleet Battles. Then, at the end of the license run, Mongoose released the Call To Arms rule set for the B5 universe, which was more of a traditional miniatures style game.

They had great Micro Machines.

maybe wing commandor but not this

I vote for a love child of X-Wing and Battle Fleet Gothic with Star Wars capital ships. Like the old Empire at War RTS PC game but on the table top.

Battlefleet Gothic (and Man 'o War) were both excellent games.

I'm not sure about a B5 fighter game, most factions only have 1 fighter so you'd miss out on the variety you get with Rebel/Imperial conflict. I think that a Battlefleet Gothic style game is a better fit for the universe.

If they do go for it though they would need to release two versions of the Drazi fighter, one green and one purple. Drazi smart! ;)

I'd like to see both Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica done with this system with nice quality game pieces too.

Some weird B5 trivia:

Tracy Scoggins lives around the corner from me. I don't know her personally but I know others who do. She is off the rocker now and paranoid crazy lady.

I spent a weekend at the same hotel with Claudia Christian several years back. I don't think she was sober the whole weekend. She is quite fond of leather pants and is not opposed to removing her shirt in public. We spent some time with her, she is quite the party girl and brings a nice entourage of females with her.

I hadn't thought of Wing Commander either. You're right! That would work even better than B5. Someone get a hold of Chris Roberts now!!!!

Of all the shows, B5 has had a very eccentric cast. I just watched the 20th anniversary reunion from Phoenix Comic Con. They've lost a lot of people over the years. I'm not surprised some of them are a little nuts. Jason Carter is another one from what I can tell. I would honestly party with Claudia Christian any day.

B5 also had a minis game from Agents of Gaming, long before Mongoose made Call to Arms. I never did get the movement system, as everyone that played in my area used the Vector SYstem, and you needed a PHD in physics to understand how it worked properly.

I'd like to see both Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica done with this system with nice quality game pieces too.

LOL... Hollywood

I would think with the Newtonian way space battles were portrayed in B5 that a vector-based system would work better.

Oh it does. It's just overly complex to put into practice on a game board. I remember having to know the amounts of thrust to move forward, minus reverse, plus thrust to turn, minus thrust to stop turn, and factor in inertia.

Yeah. No.
