I'm going to share one little tip that I've discovered, and invite you to share your tips as well.
Turns
Turns can be pretty tricky. You know they move you 90 degrees to port or starboard, but when your ship is at an angle it can be difficult to estimate where it's going to land. Here's the tip.
Imagine there is a line running from the back corner of your ship, to the opposite front corner (on the side that you want to turn towards). Your new location will be along this line, but it will change distance depending on the speed you've chosen.
Armed with this knowledge, you can know whether that turn is going to take you off the board. Or, as in the picture above, you can make daring maneuvers around obstacles that you would have otherwise shied away from.
What's trickier is estimating where along that line your ship will fall based on your chosen speed. For the turn speed 1, if you measure range from the center of your ship's starting position, to the center of where it ends up, it's just over halfway through range band 1. For turn three, your closest corner is just inside range 1. If you have other ideas of how to quantify this, feel free. Just keep practicing!
I hope this has been helpful to at least a handful of people. It has helped me tremendously.
I look forward to hearing your tips below!
