Solution for bases sliding and pegs that come apart

By afilter, in X-Wing

I have read in a number of threads asking what is the best surface to game on so the ships do not move. I went through this as well using Marine vinyl and the GF9 mats.

I finally found the solution while solving another problem. I play wings of Glory and it has similar pegs that X-Wing does. A problem is the pegs tend to come apart when you pick up the model. This happens in x-wing as well.

I now use a product called hob-e-tac. It is a glue that dries clear and remains tacky. Imagine the stuff on the back of credit cards when you receive them which is similar. I use this for all my Wings of Glory pegs, so when I started playing X-wing last year I did the same.

When I use it with X-wing I place a very small amount of hob-e-tac on the male end of the pegs as well as coat the hole in the base where the peg gois in. Use a small paint brush and literally lightly paint the area you want to apply. Keep in mind less is better as it has amazing stickiness. I have not had a peg come out accidentally yet and you can easily disassemble when done.

As for the bases sliding on the gaming surafce a small amount of hob-e-tack applied to the four corners of the bottom of the base completely solves the problem.

The nice thing is it can easily be removed if at some point in the future you do not want it anymore. It is cheap so it can be reapplied as needed. The key is to use a very small amount as it goes a long way.

A 2oz bottle cost about $6 and will last you forever.

HTH,

I'll have to check it out. Thanks

P.S. If I call now do I get a 2nd bottle for free?

LOL....if you follow my advice you should not need another bottle. In fact one bottle could probably cover an entire gaming group and then some if properly stored. ;)

Sorry if it sounded like an infomerical.

I should have included the disclaimer: I have no ties to the aforementioned product and I believe there are similar products that do the same thing, this is just the one I used. :D

Thanks for the info. I have a couple ships that the pegs don't stay connected as well as I'd like. So this stuff sounds ideal.

I'm glad you pointed it out. I use self-adhesive clear square rubber bumpers for my stands, one for each corner. It's worked out great for me, but this might have saved me some time, money, and storage space. I'll probably still check it out for the pegs though.

Hmmm....that looks purple to me. ;)

I already have two play mats (Marine Vinyl and GF9). The nice thing about the tack glue is it will work on any surface home or away for less than $6.

Yoga mat play mat. I bought one and cut it in half. Now everyone in my gaming group has one because it is so awesome. Squishy, lets you slide a little bit, but is gripy when you need it to me. It is black, relatively smooth, and works for more than just X-Wing.

I got the extra-long black one, split it in half width-wise and used a white paint pen to mark off 3x3 area on each. It gives you 2 mats, provides a few inches of leeway on the side of the mat for cards, minis etc. and if you want, you can align the mats for a 3x6 area :)

Also used the paint pen to dot the mats with stars. They look great!! And as you noted, it grips the minis good.

Considered rubberized mouse pads, cut in squares to fill bottom of bases. Good weight and grip.

What happens to the tacky stuff on the base corners when you play on felt? I imagine it isn't pretty.

Hmmm....I have not played on felt. If you do play on felt then I assume you do not need to worry about sliding bases. ;)

Since the tack glues does not come off easily once dry unless you peel/rub it off my guess is it would just collect the loose fibers and eventually loose the tackiness. At that point you could simply remove it and re-apply.

Red (I think she goes by Cat elsewhere) has some good solutions.

Yup, that's me. I answer to lots of names... Cat frequently since I started playing roller derby some years ago. RedWilde here and on some forums is a short form of my last name, and Red is a fine shortening of that. Mo or miniMo (if they wouldn't take 2 character) on some forums, short for Maureen.

Mouse pad. It's perfect.

I bought a 1 meter square sheet of silicone rubber, 1.5mm thick in black for £35. Then flicked some white paint of a brush and spotted white paint with a skewer. looks good doesnt slip.

Folds or rolls up without retaining a crease.

Cut it to 3' x 3' obviously. Have also glued some of the offcut into bases recess, extra grip and good if no matt to hand, only a table.

I did however have to spend another £4 pn a bottle of acetone to treat one side. of the silicone to make it tacky.
