Using "Green Stuff" to make Custom ships

By Bablo, in X-Wing

Can i use green stuff to make custom ships?

I was thinking of Silicon Molding... but i am preety sure the detailing is going to be bad.

However, using Green Stuff, it should be much better with the detailing but i am not sure of the overall durability and stability of the end product..

Any idea guys?

I have found green stuff is useful for repairs and making small alterations to models but I do not think it would be good enough to make a model the size of the fighters in this game fully out of it. I would suggest making the basic framework of the model with plasticard or balsa wood. The maybe styrene sheets for flat areas. Green Stuff could then be used for added details like rounded areas such as the cockpit. Of course feel free to give it a go and if you already have plenty of experience with it then I am sure interested in seeing what you come up with.... any clues in what you are thinking of making? Is it a variation of an existing ship?

Green stuff is used to make models of this size all of the time, it has long been one of the choice sculpting mediums for the miniature gaming market. As a rule you will use green stuff and other epoxy putties for organic shapes and you want to use plasticard or something similar for the more geometric shapes. As an example you might make the majority of an A-wing out of green stuff, but you would probably make an x-wing mostly out of plasticard. Also, work in layers. Its going to slow down your project tremendously but its the only way you will get any decent detail into the mini.

I am considering the Rogue Shadow... since its a unique ship and only one is suppose to exist anyway.

the dimensions in scale would be in between the Small and Medium ships...its way bigger than the X-wing But slightly smaller than the Millennium Falcon. So for this.. i would consider the a bit of plastic sheets with the Green Stuff... the rotating panels would be nice but i'll see how it goes.

If you truly want custom ships i would look into 3D Printing. There are currently several options already availabel on Shapeways you can order.

Something you want may already be available. If not if you are handy with the CAD software or know someone who is anyone can upload files to be printed.

I have used shapeways multiple times for another game and the detail can be amazing.

HTH,

mix Greenstuff with Fine White Milliput, you get something that is far more scuptural and hard wearing. You can make ships out of greenstuff, but I would work on top of a wire or plasticard armiture.

Hmm I believe it's about twice the length of the Falcon. So your slightly out on your size estimation. I was looking this up last night..

So I would build the base shape out of plasticard for this one and then do fine detailing in greenstuff.
