I was hoping there would be some fellow X- Wingers had some experience with the GF9 playmats. I am wondering how the playing surface is and if it grips the ships well enough that they don't go sliding around.
Questions about the GF9 mats
Yes the mats are really nice. Good surface, scratch easy though.
Yeah, I've got scratches on my as well. And I'd have to say it doesn't help much if at all in keeping the ships in places. Gently tapping them with move templates or with fingers when placing or removing tokens can still budge the ships out of place a bit. I think you almost need a rubber surface to eliminate those problems. I still like my mat though. It looks sharp, even with the minor scratching and It rolls up and still lays out pretty flat without much effort. And it does look good.
Overall the GF9 mats are a plus. I have one for War at Sea as well and it is my Map of choice. As an alternative, Marine Vinyl also works real well as a gaming surface for a fraction of the cost of the MSRP for a GF9 mat.
I agree with what everyone has posted so far. Very nice mat, scratches kinda easily though. It doesnt help the ships stick, but theres a tutorial over on A Few Manuevers on how to add silicate to the bottoms (which I've done and it helps immensely). I'd say the mat was worth the money overall, especially since most other options cost almost as much and don't look as nice.
I just got a GF9 map recently and really like it. The mat images look outstanding. Play surface is good. I would agree with others that if you bump a ship it can move, but does grip well overall.
I have to go with a thumbs up. Well worth the money.
i got mine discounted from a my LGS for helping demo some games
it does show scratches, even after only a handful of games. its a bit slippy but overall pretty good to play on. 7/10
I love mine, I got the star field and Death Star ones. Worth it if you don't have the time or skills to make your own.
I picked up the Space Station mat and love it. I haven't seen any scratches on it yet and does a good job for X-Wing. One thing I've noticed is the asteroid counters tend to blend in with the artwork.
BTW, this is the solution for bases that slide on your playing surface.
HTH,
