Creative skill checks

By skalapunk, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi all. Long time lurker, first time poster here :wave:

I am making this post mainly to get my own creative juices flowing. I thought we could make a running thread about creative skill checks. That is, come up with some ideas for various things you'd use different skill checks for.

Examples:

-The floor below you crumbles and you fall into the basement! Make an athletics check to see if you mitigate any damage/strain.

-You were hired to be the mastermind behind a heist of some kind. Make a skulduggery check to see if you can come up with a plan.

================

I may be GMing for my group, and my idea of a good time is to add in a bunch of situations and scenarios that ask the players to make skill checks. Often times, it seems like many skills aren't utilized. Things like "mechanics" and "charm" seem to hog the spotlight! I'd like to give all the other skills a chance to be used too :lol:

Let's get those creative juices flowin'!

It really depends on the situation that the players are in. My party ended up with a few different skill resets once they found out that Negotiation is the skill to find white market goods. In several instances, my fringer with his 1 rank in most Knowledge skills has proven invaulable to the party.

Referencing the above post, I can see several uses for Intellect/skill for raw knowledge about a topic. such as Int/Gunnery for knowing about the weapons used. I have a former Twilek slave dancer (whom is now a Marauder) and I'm waiting for the "sword dance" to come up. I'll probably make it a Presence/Melee roll, maybe Cunning/Melee depending no what they are trying to accomplish.

Just remember that this system isn't really about chucking a lot of dice around. It's more about the narrative elements of the story you are creating.

And good luck.

heh, i made a similar thread in the GM section

Skills like Ranged, Computers, perception, and vigilance get used all the time. But players seem to be wary of picking skills like Survival or Knowledge (Core Worlds) in fear of "wasting" their XP on something that won't get used.

I'd like to be able to use those skills more often, but need ideas.

Exactly, and this is what I'm trying to address with this thread. Thanks for the reply.

For falling down, I'd say Coordination would be more fitting to not get hurt as much.

The book states one of the skills is definitely used to mitigate falling damage. I don't have it with me to look it up atm, but it's in there. And I recall it being athletics or coordination.
