Wave Three Purchase Preference Question

By Ken at Sunrise, in X-Wing

Hi, I'm hoping to get some suggestions on what to purchase in Wave 3. And before you say it personal tastes, I know that haha.

Here is my basic style. We play casually and I have a decent mixture. Bigger than some and not nearly as many as others. This way we can put together both sides, divide the forces and play. We seldom don't play more than 1 big ship in a game and never more than one per side.

I currently have:

  • 4 X-Wing
  • 3 Y-Wing (probably 1 too many)
  • 4 A-Wing (too many)
  • 1 YT-1300
  • 6 TIE Fighters (will probably expand to 8)
  • 2 TIE Advanced
  • 4 TIE Interceptors (cool)
  • 1 Fire-Spray

Enter Wave 3:

  • Bombers - I need 2 at least. Not sure about a third one. Maybe one as a boarding craft?
  • B-Wings - Just 2??? Thematically beyond X-Wing and TIE/Ln aren't most ships support?
  • HWK-290 - Just 2??? Is there any reason to have 3?
  • Lamda - 1 But I want two because I love them. I could use them as disabled ships in a scenario? But seriously beyond 1 for a game, probably not?

You thoughts?

We played a 200 pt game last night. My daughter fielded 5 imperial ships: 1 shuttle--col jendon, 2 bombers- Jonas and scimitar pilot, howlrunner, and BH---all loaded out! I played-- wedge, Luke, istiban, Horton, Kyle katarn, and Roark. I had adv proton torps on wedge and istiban, blaster turrets on Horton and Kyle, and all my ept's were swarm tactics. Needless to say my guys shot first with PS12's thanks to Roark. She had photon bombs on the bombers and seismic charge on the BH--when she dropped all 3 they were effective, but due to collisions howlrunner couldn't escape the combined effects and was vaped, put two crits on istiban (she still had 4 shields) and destroyed wedge.

There were target locks and focuses flying around the board, so far, I'm very pleased with the wave 3 ships.

Back to your list...looks about right.

It comes down to personal taste?? :-P

I've got a slightly smaller fleet (so far), but thinking of aiming for two of each, except for the HWK. The HWK just seems like it won't be able to hold its own from the stats and manoeuvre dial, so even as a support ship I don't think I'd ever field more than two. The Lamb just seems awesome (good model, points, stats) despite the poor dial), and I may add a third B wing as they were always a favourite of mine and also seem to be pretty good.

I guess it never hurts to start at one of each and work upwards....unless you don't have any budgetary restraints! I wonder if my wife would mind if I got a dozen of everything....

Buget you say?

I'm already explaining to my wife why I just bought the Blockade Runner (Amazon) and Rebel Base for the GR-70/45 and now FFG is coming out with those exact same models which, of course, I need. Anyone want to buy a Blockade Runner and GR-70? Haven't even play them in a game yet. haha.

I play both factions and we tend to play some larger games now and then.

For wave 3 I ordered:

4 B-wings

4 TIE bombers

2 HWK-290

2 Lamda shuttles

I have no idea if I will ever use them all at once but better to have them just in case, plus the extra cards are always handy. I will probably pick up a few more in addition to the above but those are for my son (too young to play but loves the models).

I held to my principles of moderation with Wave 3. Which has remained: two of each product (including core set) & one of each for big ships.

Sure, I'd love to have more, but I have to balance the cost, space and use of having more. Like you, Ken, I do not play more than one of any of the big ships. I have found (except for flying 4 X-wings or 6 named T/F pilots) I wish to field more variety of ships than numbers. I feel it makes it more interesting for me and less convenient for my opponent who mayhave an easy strategy for countering ships which are all the shame on the maneuver dial.

I think that you'll want 2-3 B-wings, 2-3 Bombers and 1 each of the Shuttle and HWK, Whether you opt for 2 or 3 of the B-wings/Bombers will depend on whether you prefer to run mixed or homogeneous lists.

Originally pre-ordered:

3x B-Wings

2x HWK-290s

2x Shuttles

3x TIE Bombers

Had a friend pick up some extra at GenCon (so I could play)

2x B-Wings

1x Shuttle

2x TIE Bombers

I'll probably sell off one of the shuttles and keep two.

For wave three I pre-ordered.

2 x B-Wings

1 x HWK-290

2 x Tie Bombers

1 x Shuttle

I didn't order any more of the Hwk-290 or shuttles just because I'm not sure how this new support ship ideas are going to play out. I might order another B-Wing here as they are starting to look really good. Still not sure about another Tie Bomber, not sure how the cost vs effectiveness will be.

Noting the scarcity of ships due to popularity and my impatience with waiting for re-releases, I went ahead and pre-ordered 3 B-Wings, 3 Bombers, 2 HWKs and a Lambda. I'm planning on using my ships in some pre-planned scenarios and also with the Edge of Empire RPG, so my quanties are dictated by more than what's probable for a 100 pt game. I think I'll end up with four of each small ship, and 2 or 3 of each large (or are they mediu, now).

I picked up 2 of each of the small ships and 1 shuttle at gencon. You're probably Ok with that mix, though the shuttle is relatively cheap compared to other large ships so you might want to run 2 of them at some point. The dial is absolutely horrendous, but there may be a decent strategy out there to mitigate that some.

You guys are great thanks.

The extra shuttles and HWK-290 really isn't to run them all at once so much as it is I want models instead of cards for the missions. If I could paint I'd get the 3d Senator's shuttle and use it too. haha.

So I'm probably going to stick with 2 B-Wings and 2 Bombers and 1 Shuttle :( and 1 HWK-290 to start with. Like RogueMorgan I prefer to play with mixed squads but this is easier on the budget.

But I may very will end up with an extra down the road.

2 of each for me. (I have 3x starters, 1x blister of each wave 1, 2x large wave 2 and 4x small wave 2)

I may buy additional ships as time goes on. I think I can justify another Bomber and Lambda Shuttle easily.

In the short term I would like 1 Hwk, 1 Lambda, 2 B-wings, and 3+ Bombers. I feel like having at least 3 bombers is going to be the way to make them shine but I guess we will see.

At Gen Con, I picked up:

1 HWK-290 (that may change, if I see a viable reason to add one more)

2 B-wings (I may add one more)

2 TIE Bombers (I may add one more)

1 Lambda Class Shuttle

I will say, it will be interesting to see what builds will be added to the list.

I really liked flying 2 hawks, Kyle and Roark!

I think I agree with the census: 2 B-wing, 2 Bombers, 1 Shuttle, 1 Hawk.

And don't forget about the large rebel ships that will be in early 2014.

I'm gonna need a bigger house...

I want 2 B-Wings, 1 Bomber, and a Shuttle. I'm not really crazy about the HWK, though. I'd like to get one at some point just to have more options, but for right now I'd rather get another Interceptor, a Y-Wing (don't have any), and a few more Ties (I have 5).

I think I'll end up with 3 B-Wings, 2 HWK-290s, 2 TIE Bombers, and 1 shuttle. I might decide on another shuttle depending on the upgrades. I got to look through the upgrades at GenCon but don't remember all of them. I picked up 1 each of the small ships for myself while there.

Adrenaline Rush might push me to buy a third TIE Bomber. I'm getting 2 HWK-290s for the Blaster Turret. I've already got a list that involves the HWK-290 being a focus farm for Blaster Turret touting Y-Wings. Speaking of which, this wave made me want more Y-Wings. Some great secondary weapon options for them.
