Needing Some Beasties

By azato, in Game Masters

I am setting up an adventure for a new group of players (and I have never GM'ed an Edge game) and I am looking for a combat encounter that will be mildly challenging but will require a number of rolls from the players. This will occur on a jungle planet and I am thinking of adding a lot of smaller beasties for them to contend with or a medium sized creature. Perhaps they will have multiple encounters. There doesn't appear to be a lot of creatures stated out in the core book and I am not sure how to properly scale. I thought about using something like the storm troopers stat block and just adjust for melee rather than ranged. There are some creatures statted in the Beta forums, but I have no idea on how much of a challange they are.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Just remember if you use a stormtrooper as your base, your beast will only be able to successfully slash at sand crawlers and jawas.

...but with remarkable precision...

I made up some stats for Slice Hounds for an NPC.

Slice Hounds (Brawn 2; Agility 2; Intellect 1; Cunning 3; Willpower 1; Presence 1; Soak 3; Wound Threshold 4; Skills in Groups [brawl, Perception, Survival, Vigilance]; Claws [brawl; Damage 3; Critical 3; Range |Engaged|]

Thanks, FangGrip. Lets say I have a party of 3 player or I have a party of 5 players....About how many is a reasonable number to throw against them (the party has the potential to take some wounds but generally guaranteed to win) and what is the number that becomes **CRAZY**?

That is where it gets a lot more difficult. Every group has different combat skills, gear, talents, and cunning. No single set of rules would work for everyone. Start off with a few small minion groups to get a feel, then have a few more charge in as needed. It is a lot easier to add a few more small beasties than to take them out again.

Cool. I might start with x-1 and see how that goes... That shouldn't be too bad since the players may get some shots in before they get attacked.

Thanks, FangGrip.

That should be safe. You may also want to split them into two different minion groups, and combine them if needed.

don't forget the power of the RESKIN. Simply put, take a mynoc or something that has "stats" and describe it as something else. the PC's will never need to see your notes, and thus will never know.Heck i can call a gammoran thug a dire wolf and not be too far off.

:P Might even leave in the vibroaxe and some very freaky slashing fangs/saliva/wierd creepy unexplainable thing.

BUMP. Still havent seen many people doing creature stats.

Any thoughts/suggestions for this. Its a big cat (think Panther or Tiger) on a world in permanent darkness. The group is searching a crash site when the Panthers show up because they smell some dead/dying in the crash. 2 of them will work together to take out weaker members of party.

The burn2 quality represents a bleed, caused by the claws. I'll save the crippling blow for use with 3 advantage or a triumph.

You might consider henchmen/minions pack of beasties. So they get less hp but more skills. I would go for pack composed of Pc-number beasts... And let´s say a number of pack equal to Half the pcs.

Ex : 4 pc = 2 packs of 4 minions beasts

Except these are supposed to be threatening large beasts, not dime a dozen throw aways. They are supposed to pose a threat. Not to mention that nearly all felines are solitary hunters. Tigers are known to occasionally work together, mainly mother-offspring combos...which this represents.

Diggles, the OP thought about adding a bunch of smaller creatures. So is my suggestion.

Dunno if it is helpful or not, but there are a number of beasties in Beyond the Rim , the published 3 part adventure... There is a good spread from bug swarms, to rat like creatures, to the larger Nexu and even cybernetically modified Nexu. Could be a good place to start.

It is a pretty decent adventure too if you are looking for a pregen.

You could always stat up an acklay or Rancor as well, also the Gundark in the book looks nasty to fight.

Thanks, I'll check out the Beyond the Rim next time I'm around FLGS. There are stats for Captive Rancor in the rulebook for Beginner's Game

I recently played a game where the PCs were attacked by a bear. Here's the basic stats:

It has five brawn and two levels in brawl. It has two willpower (trying to remember if that's the right characteristic) and deals an average of minimum seven damage, plus successes (plus one for claws and plus one because it's a BEAR).

Anyways, that's just the basics. I flipped through Beyond the Rim at my local hobby store, and it had a good amount of animals.
