DEATH STAR 1/270 Scale... Just a matter of time :-O

By Bablo, in X-Wing

After seeing the WAVE 4 post... its just a matter of time for the Death Star I or II to be out...

Death Star I MIGHT be do-able... Death Star II is out of the question... but maybe.. who knows...

I thought both Death Stars were the same size, just number 2 wasn't fully spherical? I would settle for a Nebulon B Frigate, that thing is seriously cool at any scale.

You do realise that at 1/270 scale the smaller Death Star that appears in New Hope would be 590m across... That is over half a kilometer.

Death Star II is quite a bit larger, at least 5 times the size. In game scale would be over 3km wide... So I can't see it appearing on the board anytime soon.

However Trench boards rock.

If i understand the scale correctly, a "to scale" Death Star would be roughly the size of the Epcot Center....

I did the math... and yes... arnd 1/2km in 1/270 scale...

now thats a "table" top battle we cannot miss...

The question would be .. Would you make the play surface spherical and magnitise the fighters... The curve would be so shallow over half a KM, that the maneuver templates would still work fine.

You guys really think big! And kinda impossible.

Yeah but the gamers would need magnetic shoes too...

I'm in.

I was thinking some kind of Mission Impossible harness and dangle them from cranes.

oooh yeah with the appropriate music to go with it! the imperial march or the MI theme...

A tablemat specifically designed to look like the surface of the Death Star... now that might be worth picking up! :P

They're out there... Gale Force 9 makes them:

They also do a basic space one as well, plus pre-painted Asteroids. :)

Thanks for the heads up... asteroids wow! :o

I like GF9 but those rocks are a bad buy. Only a few get flight stands, the rest just lay there. Not to mention asteroids are the cheapest and easiest thing to produce yourself.

These are cut Styrofoam stuck on flight stands.

My own collection (no pics of hand) are just landscape lava rocks that were primed in black and dry-brushed suitable colors (grey, red, and blue). Then a quick hole with a Dremel and ready for mounting on flight stands.

how do you handle ships that end up on the 3-D asteroids? It seems like this becomes a difficult aspect of the game to manage.

i put the asteroids markers down and pick up the asteroids when needed.

His picture not withstanding, most people still put down the cardboard asteroids from the XW box and then just put the asteroid models on top. In the event of an overlap, you just remove the asteroid off the cardboard. Thats what I tend to do anyway. You keep it playable, but add to the cinematic effect.

I got lava rocks. I went to Lowes and asked how much for a handful. They looked at me kind of funny and said we only sell them by the bag so he reached in the display box grabbed a bunch and said here come back soon.

I got the Corsec stands which match the asteroid counters perfectly but they aren't really needed.

The DeathStar play mat looks cool, but playing on it is a total nightmare. The thing is so busy visually you can't find tokens and what not. I would only get one to do a deathstar specific scenario, no for general play.

If I was making Asteroids, I would have the base representing the area they affect and the rock magnetised so it would be really easy to pop off the stem/asteroid when a ship ended up on top of them.

P.S. I wanted this but didn't know how to use it.

If I print it out on card stock I have to tape it together, not very transportable or easily stored. Shame really.

I hope the FFG boards come with a way to keep them together.

I have played on this for a few games at a tournament and I also really don't like it. It literally gives me a headache to look at it. Not to mention some of the curved shadows are almost the identical size and shape of some of the turn maneuver templates.
