How should I organize events to get people interested in the game?

By GroggyGolem, in Star Wars: The Card Game - Organized Play

So the first Star Wars event at my local comic shop was held yesterday. Here's the thing though, it was not lead by any employee or anyone affiliated with the shop. A fellow enthusiast of the LCG was trying to get people to come but didn't really organize it correctly. I mean that he didn't' have a specific time to arrive, had about 10 people sign up on a page with their name and email and never sent out an email and generally just didn't do much other than tell people that walked into the shop about it. Being nice, I made an appearance and had I not convinced my friend to join me, it would just have been the one guy and myself. We played 1 round of the LCG and then things had to be cut short there. The shop owner did not seem really enthusiastic about it at all and the guy leading the event didn't do much either, yet the shop owner tells me that Thursday is going to be their designated Star Wars day there. Clearly there may have been some interest in the game since at least 10 people signed up but no one was informed of a specific time of day to arrive and no one really showed.

Basically, if there are any more Thursdays designated for Star Wars or if I ever wanted to try and host an event at the shop, what are your tips for going about doing that in the best way? How can I get more people interested in coming? That day was supposed to be about all the FFG Star Wars games and not just the LCG but it didn't really happen at all. What can I do to help get people into the idea of starting up a tournament scene for the LCG/X-Wing etc?

I am hosting a big event next weekend in CO and am expecting 20-30 people. I worked with the stores around the state that hosted regional events and the others I knew had playgroups through the Yahoo! group I created to purchase "future" force packs. I sent flyers, chose a good venue and date, got some unique prize support and used the existing sites and craigslist for splash advertisement.

The proof is in the pudding they say; so we will see how it goes!

Show up at your local shop and play. Get the list of email addresses and make a yahoo or google group to arrange games. I set up a local group and when I started I knew no one who played and after a couple of months of playing every Monday we have a goupe of 6-10 players regularly with more lurking. It's all about preservation and sticking with it. Also post on the boards here what you're doing and when your pmaying. Lots of people lurk on the forums and don't post, maybe they will show up and play!

Awesome, thanks for the help @MasteJediAdam, @brimmstorm!
