Just starting out

By DOA362, in X-Wing

Thanks to everyone for providing insightful posts. I'm new too, but I've been familiarizing myself with this board (and others). This is a useful thread for a noob like me.

I just recently picked this up as well after watching a youtube video of it. It was this or the Star Trek version. While I love star trek just as much as star wars, the ships in this one are way better looking.

So now I have an itch I can't scratch because only have 1 core set is getting rather dull when I have $400 in my pocket waiting to buy more ships (both rebels and imperials) but they just aren't available anywhere I've looked.

Ebay to the rescue!

This is definitely a better game than WizKids.

I know you are on the FFG site so obviously the people here are fans of this game, but objectively this is a superior game in pretty much every way. The components are much, much, MUCH higher quality. Take one of your X-Wings from the core set and put it next to an X-Wing from Wiz-Kids. If that doesn't say everything that needs to be said about quality and attention to detail, I don't know what will.

The rule set is both deeper AND mechanically simpler than WizKids. The rules work very well, and what initially appears simplistic becomes something much richer as you master the interactions.

The company support has been great so far. FFG is committed to continued updates, 1 or 2 per year, and so far has been able to not only put out new expansions but has managed to avoid "power creep" and obsolescence of older models in the way other companies do (think 40k).

The only real knock on this game is that it has been so extraordinarily popular that it can be hard to find ships to buy. Hopefully FFG is able to expand its production, but realistically I would prefer a game that is much more popular than expected than a marginally popular game. At least this way, you know for sure FFG is going to be committed to updates and expansions for the foreseeable future, especially when the new movies start coming out.

As for carrying your ships, go to Wal-Mart and head into the crafts section. There are a couple different "bead boxes" that will hold the ships nicely, including the Millenium Falcon and Slave-1 (save the plastic from inside the ship boxes when you open them, and use that plastic to line your bead boxes so the ships wont rattle around), and you can buy an inexpensive carrying case there that is designed to hold those boxes. I suggest the craft department because you can find identical boxes to the ones in the fishing section, but at half the price. I am guessing that is because most men don't bother to shop through the whole store and just pay full price for the first thing they see that will work. :)

Welcome to the game, enjoy!

Actually you can't compare FFG X-Wings to WK X-Wings because WK doesn't have X-Wings. Their game is Star Trek. ;)

I have my ships stored in Battlefoam. It works great. I'm looking for something really good to store tokens in, though. Right now I'm using a mini tackle box but there must be a better option. I'm thinking a plastic tube, like the ones Chessex gaming stones come in, only a bit bigger so it will fit in my foam case.

I think that post was referring to the Wizards of the Coast Starship Battles game. Those things were not a great product at all. Not proud to say I spent too much of my limited college income on their randomized boosters, ugh. X-Wing, however, is a gorgeous product and one I am happy to spend money on. Plus, it is actually a fun game.

I was talking about Wizards of the Coast, sorry. Here is their product along side FFG's product.

What else is there to say?

At least the WotC stuff can usually be found for far less and its smaller size makes it easier to field large groups. While the ships in SSB may not have been the greatest (and after the first few boosters buying them as singles was the wiser choice) what really sunk that game was a pretty horrific rule set. Ok, maybe if you liked things extremely simple they worked but with limited range options (basically adjacent or any), movement options, and everything seeming so much alike it just didn't work that well.
