Wave 4!

By dashrendar, in X-Wing

So, some cool news for those that aren't too interested in the Cap Ships and want to stick with 100 point dogfights.

My friend who's at GenCon told me that FFG was pretty clear that these ships are NOT Wave 4 and that Wave 4 is something else that they aren't talking about yet.

I'm hoping that means that the standard game and release schedule for it will remain largely as is and the X-Pocalypse line will be on it's own schedule and an alternative way to play. I want the Cap Ships. I want to play games with them. I don't want games with them to replace 100 point dogfights as the standard.

Jim,

I like your thoughts. I don't think you are the only one.

Me and the guys I play with are/were big 40k tournament players, and we have been steadily moving to around 150 pts now lately. The bigger points don't really imbalance the game, but let you use a larger chunk of your collection. We will probably stop at about 200, so this is all good news for me.

dumb question amnesty, what is x-pocalypse

Just large games of xwing. If all goes to plan, we may be playing 1000 point total game on Sunday.

aaahh get it. thanks!

I have forgotten about 100p games since wave 2. 200p is a sweet spot for me.

I do believe that there was a post a few months back from some guys in the U.K. who got to do a closed door meeting with FFG people and when they came out they said that the YT and Firespray were "medium" ships....

Yeah , i was the Guy that openend the thread about it before wave 3 was announced. Most of you didn't trust my info that came from german distributor :-) actually this isn't Wave 4 . The large ships will be released between the wave's. .. Next time trust the germans ;-)

You're right. It's not a Wave, it's freakin' tsunami! Which is also a wave I guess... nevermind.

Soooo.....if the transport and frigate are large ships, and the anti-pusuit lasers are large ship 'only' modifications, it seems we have a problem....

J/k....but thought it was interesting, while getting ready to play...

Well said Jim....the capital ships add a new dimension....but I would hope that the "main" game would still be dog fight based.....the capitals do lend a flavor for scenarios though...and just being AWESOME frakin models!!!

I think it's unlikely that this new mode will displace the old dogfight mode - it'll be too hard to carry the required number of ships around, especially to supply both (or more?) sides

I could see perhaps a fun scenario pitting 4 X-Wings and the transport against a points-equaling squad of TIE Fighters and loaded up Bombers

In these type of games, big ships end up being anchor points for the rest of the fighting to pivot around. I remember playing some great games of aeronautica against a Manta. They allow for a change of pace, but unless they mess up the stats it's going to be slow an ponderous. I doubt it will go much faster than a 1 action, maybe a 2 with stress. This means that you always know where they are going to be, faster ships will probably make a real mess of it unless you have defending fighters protecting it and stopping the enemy from sitting in it's blind spots.

For the transport in particular, I never remember seeing one of those things shoot in any incarnation. It seems a bit like a move to get people to play more missions. You put in a token like the senator's shuttle and no one uses it, at least I've not run into any missions yet, but if you make a big model that gets people invested and diversifies the gameplay more. I'm increasingly liking the idea of storm trooper transports and a capture the corvette mission.

The thing I like about these large ships is that they provide options. They will be adding a whole new layer to the game. For people who want to stick with 100 point games, then these will not be necessary or needed. But for those who wish to add another dimension to X-wing, well here it is! I'm excited to see where FFG is taking this game and am pleased with the direction thus far.

In the EU cannon it is established that they are in fact armed, just not well enough to take on capitol ships which is why they need an escort.

Personally I'm into it. Being someone who has come from 40k I enjoy the dynamic of having a "regular size" and a "super big special rules for awesome models size". I will pick both of these up when I have the cash and use them in fun games and mega battle style stuff.

I hope that they don't become part of the tournament scene though and that dog fighting stays the norm. I think we can hope that that will stay mostly true because of the uninterrupted wave release schedule.

I kind of get the feeling, as well, that the capital ships are more like scenario packs (think Gargantuan/Colossal dragons for D&D Minis).

Ah cool. Where was that? I'm mostly going off of X-wing Alliance here. Something like a blaster turret and 1-speed movements would make some sense.

Umm its just mentioned in different Rebellion Era EU canon. I mean it was mentioned off hand in Choices of One (just finished reading recently). I don't know particulars of what kind of load out it would have but I would imagine something in the order of the cannon upgrade cards, Ion Cannon, Heavy Laser Cannon, things like that. Not many, but enough to stave off a few small fighters at a time.

I can see 100 pt dogfights staying in for tournaments, and the capital ships being a large table event. Something like 1000 pts vs 1000 pts from a couple of capital ships per side and everyone bringing a 100pt squad.

Or they may just start creating divisions. Dogfight and Epic divisions.

FWIW, Wookieepedia claims a variant GR-75 is equipped with "Twin fire-linked laser cannon turrets" and of the 7 crew, one of them is a gunner.

Yeah that sounds about right.

Or the flipside is that they are more like terrain pieces for the game? I'd still pick them up though, as those shots look pretty cool. I've always liked the Blockade Runner. Now, I wonder if the Corellian Gunship will be made? That would be darn neat!

Wait....what if the new large ships ARE carrying cases for the smaller ships? Now that would be awesome.
