New crew: Flight Instructor (from lambda exp.)

By Sergovan, in X-Wing

Crew card: Flight Instructor

"When defending, you may reroll 1 of your (focus) results. If the attacker’s pilot skill is value “2” or lower, you may reroll 1 of your blank results instead."

4 points

It can only be taken by crewed ships: Falcon, Slave, Lambda, HWK 290. At most you have 2 defence dice for the Slave and Hwk, 1 for Lambda and Falcon

It will improve the odds of cancelling 1 hit for a large ship on every attack as this is for every defence roll. It's like adding a second dice.

Large ships now have way better odds of avoiding damage if they take this crew.

Suddenly squads of academy ties going after the falcon won't be putting on so much damage.

X-wings going after the Slave will have to make extra passes.

This could be a card that tilts the balance over to large ships in combat.

So I'm thinking your Lambda of choice is going to carry a Sensor Jammer, Rebel captive, and Flight instructor to make them an unpleasant to shoot at flying target with awesome support options for an attendant squadron. For instance, make it colonel Jendon and give him ST-321. Or simply captain Kagi protecting a TIE swarm.

Then again, if this card becomes more common the meta will shift towards PS 3/4 generic pilots over the PS 1/2 pilots. This won't have an enormous impact on the squadron builds, coming mostly at the cost of a few upgrades.

If anything, this card makes the decision on the defender harder than before. Most pilots will be PS 3+ right? If the defender knows they are going to re-roll a focus result, they have a choice of using the focus for offense and relying on the flight instructor, or saving it for defense when going against multiple small ships. The card would be a lot more useful if the PS 2/1 pilot defense rolls were focus/blank instead of just blank.

I look at this card similar as I look to Elusive, but better since it doesn't add a stress token. I still don't know why Elusive adds a stress token and you can only use it once per turn. Waste of points IMO.

Keyword: may. So it's either or.

This is a clever move by FFG. Everyone was taking PS 1 and 2 pilots because the 3's and 4's (barring Saber, Green, and Black) just weren't worth the points. Now you have a reason to take them, its not just pointless.

My Shuttle would have rebel captive, flight instructor, advanced sensors and a heavy laser canon. And a bunch of ties providing cover fire. But one of those ties would be a tie Bomber with the reroll 2 dice on a secondary weapon.

I think Syleh Forge is absolutely on point. FFG is trying to make all the pilots useable. Hence the nerf to the already low cost pilots. Why should they be the best in the game.

How did you get 4 Y-Wings, I cant for the life of me find a second one let alone a fourth.

Amazon with high freight costs.

I go online to a site called NWS online. If you get more than 4 ships on order the price for freight is reasonable.
