New Species: Houk

By Direach, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I've been working on a writeup for the Houk species as another "big guy" alternative to Wookiees and Trandoshans. The stats are based on available information about the Houk species, and individuals of that species. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Species: Houk

Starting Attributes:

3 Brawn
2 Agility
2 Intellect
2 Cunning
2 Willpower
1 Presence

Bully: Begin with one free level of Coercion. Coercion cannot be raised higher than 2 during character generation. Houks are naturally intimidating, and inclined to solve problems with threats and violence.

Thick Skull: Reduce the duration of any Disorient result by one round, to a minimum of zero.
Durable: Houk begin with one rank in the Durable talent at no cost.
Starting Wounds: 13 + Brawn

Starting Strain: 9 + Willpower

Starting Experience: 90 XP

Interesting. Cilionelle (with a little editing by me) made one that was a little different. It is found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jdp5u8uoqgk58kb/aZYDhU9zvw

Here's the Houk that we made:

· Wound Threshold: 13 + Brawn

· Strain Threshold: 9 + Willpower

· Starting Experience: 90 XP

· Special Abilities: Houk begin the game with one rank in Deceit or Skullduggery. They still may not train Deceit or Skullduggery above rank 2 during character creation.

· Bulky Bruiser: Houk begin play with one rank in the Durable and the Intimidating talent.

Brawn = 3, Intellect = 1

Weird. I created my campaign so that it starts on Ruul, a moon of Sriluur where Houk are found.

Thanks! And good job on those PC stats... they look quite balanced to me.

I had considered making Intellect their handicap stat, but everything I read pointed towards a species that was more impulsive, impatient, and aggressive than lacking in brainpower (like the Gamorreans). Likewise, I thought about a bonus in Skullduggery to reflect their preference for ambushes, traps, etc, but ultimately I decided that their belligerence and threatening appearance was more of a universal trait for the species. A case could be made either way, though, and if a player opted for a bonus to Skullduggery over Coercion, I don't think that would make a huge difference.

I don't have the book here at work so I couldn't fish for Talents. :)

See, I really wanted to do Coercion for awhile, but they are almost universally cowards and liars, despite their big size. They are less likely to resort to coercion than they are trickery.

But, they are huge. That's why I gave them Indimidating as well. It makes them harder to intimidate, and it makes it easier for them to do it, if the going gets rough. Enduring just makes their critical injuries less severe, since they're so bulky.

I debated going Presence as well. Cilionelle went with Intellect and I see why, because they really haven't done anything of note and kinda aren't that intelligent as a baseline. I could honestly see it go either way, since they're pretty dumb and pretty bad at being civil and taking charge.

Starting XP?

Ah, thanks... I left that off when I copied it. It's 90 XP, edited above.

I'm looking at using the Houk, and I'm considering going with this:

Starting XP: 100

Brawn 3, Agility 2, Intellect 2, Cunning 2, Willpower 2, Presence 1

Wound Threshold: 12 + Brawn

Strain Threshold: 9 + Willpower

1 rank of Coercion or Deception, with a maximum of 2 ranks at character creation

1 rank of Durable

Which is about 90% similar to what everyone else has. :)
