Murder Room Experiences

By khimaera, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

I've recently started a new Dark Heresy campaign and our inaugural mission involves the Murder Room and ties it to the Calixian Pattern Killings. I'm curious if any of you have used the Murder Room as an adventure hook and if so, what your experiences were. What was your unique spin on the subject?

No, I am afraid I haven't gotten a chance to use it yet- I've recently abused of the Night Cult, and I would be curious to try a game based on the murder room.

Might I ask how your inaugural mission started out and how it played it out? I am curious to hear what you did it with.

If I were to play, I'd likely to apply all the possibilities from the book as being true Simultaneously, I tend to do that :P

The first mission is going pretty well so far. It was designed to be done in one, but my Acolytes are nothing if not thorough investigators.
The game began with a typical procedural setup: their =I= became aware of a bizarre murder scene being investigated by the Adeptus Arbites. The Acolytes arrived at a palatial Manse owned by one of the more well-to-do Guilds on Solomon. The crime scene was a single large drawing room where the Guilder Patriarch and seven members of his family were brutally murdered. The room had been locked from the inside though the door to the patio was completely painted with fresh blood.

The PCs examined the evidence and deduced ( through extended research and consultation with the NPC Verispex Adept and several Munitorium Adepts) that the murderer had gained entrance through arcane means and that he had come from one of three Downhive Manufactorums (due to the trace contaminants in the perpetrator's boot prints.)

They ended the last game having traced the evidence to the killer's first murder, an abandoned hab flat where he killed his family. They also discovered that a local Blood Cult calling themselves the Riddle of Blood have an interest in the killers path and sent several of their members to find him.

I'm kinda mixing the three possibilities myself, the idea being that a poor, broken Manufactorum serf had a break down and the room found him. After wandering around in a fugue state for a few days, the killer went home and slaughtered his family, fleeing the scene through a door painted with the blood of his victims. Now, the blood wraith guides him to areas where the veil is thin, areas sacred to the blood god due to some forgotten violence long in the past. The Riddle of Blood has been obsessively tracking signs of the Murder Room for decades but they are woefully ignorant of its true nature and are just as likely to be victims as anyone.

I'm setting this invesitgation up to be a traumatically formative event for the Acolytes to revisit later in their careers.

Edit: I forgot, one of my Acolytes got a good look through the bloody door as it opened last game, he's pretty scarred already.

That sounds pretty horrifying! I particularly like the clue elements you've managed to plug in [contaminants in the boot prints! Genius!]

Have you did run trough the interaction with the Verispexes for it to have taken that long?

I am biased as to the mixing of ideas, but I like the twist your going for- especially the cult thats in over its head.

If a player managed to get a look trough the door- be wary of having them actually go trough it, such an event should be REALLY traumatic, and very few things are worse than a players imagination: I look forward to hearing how the rest of the game is going, and hope to come up a few ideas to might contribute to your grand scheme before then!

Can't say I have for while it wasn't bad it didn't really inspire me to a game.

For Inspiration, look no further than "Cry of Fear"

I recommend googling for a "Lets play" of this particularly horrifying game which I believe manages to portray the Murder Room disturbingly well [Mute whichever commentator you choose as to avoid the rather annoying screams and franticly inane commentary] and enjoy the particularly gruesome scenarios presented therein.

We completed the mission last night. Figuring that they must have something to do with the Murder Room, the PCs tracked the blood cult to a Meat processing plant where they took on the guise of an inspection team sent by the Guilds.

The corpulent foreman led the Acolytes into the Manufactorum and straight into a trap. Blood cultists came out of the woodwork, the Acolytes were doing well until the Magus showed up and dropped the Commissar with a blast of warp lightning (yeah, i know that Sorcery and Khornate cults don't usually mix but this guy was more of a Chaos-Undivided sort with a blood-fetish.)

The acolytes allowed themselves to be captured and were taken to a subbasement where a ritual was in progress. They were tied to a rockrete pillar with barbed wire and watched as the Magus began to summon the Blood Wraith.

To make a longstory short, the Acolytes got free just in time for the Bloodwraith to manifest and begin to slaughter the cultists. They were able to find their weapons and kill the magus, but the Bloodwraith came for them next. It cut off the tech-priest's arm, disembowled the Commissar and was about to kill our psyker when the survivors brought it down with concentrated firepower.

As the blood wraith's true form spilled forth, the psyker threw a firebomb at it and killed the daemon.

This is pretty much where things ended. Time was short, so I had to compress things. That usually results in violence.
