8.12.2013 Session Report 1 - Twin Firesprays vs. Triple Firesprays

By RoosterOnAWire, in X-Wing Battle Reports

My friend Mike E. and I played two games Tuesday night at Empire Games in Mesa AZ. Here's a battle report for the first:
My Squad: Bounty Hunter x 3
Mike's Squad: Bounty Hunter + HLC * 2 and Mauler w/Stealth Device
I allowed my friend to determine what squad I played, so that he could get practice against the squad he wanted to test his mettle against. He chose the triple Bounty Hunter squad, which I have never flown but was eager to try. I don't own three Firesprays so I used a YT base and another Firespray's template on it just to show the firing arc (so when you see the giant base with no ship on it flying around, that's a third Bounty Hunter - use your imagination).
I had initiative, so set one of my ships on the far right of the board and then set the other two up towards the middle-left so they would fly one in front of the other into the asteroid field. The idea was to do a pincher move on one of my opponent's Firesprays in the second turn. The two BH's closest to the middle of the board had range 3 at each other and took shots, resulting in my ship losing one shield.

Round two I successfully performed my "pinch" but did not accurately estimate my soft 3 turn distance properly and the rear Firespray bumped the one I had in front of it. His ships came forward, and managed to avoid getting blocked by any of what I did. I did some damage to his Firespray in the middle (the one with the twin target locks on it in the image below that all three of my ships are aiming at), but Mauler and his far-right BH put a serious hurt on my ship-less BH, reducing him to 3 hull. Ouch.

What I MEANT to do on the next turn with my moves (pictured below before his BHs K-turned and Mauler swung in with a hard 2) was move up and bump into the BH closest to Mauler with my ship-less BH, hoping it would cause him to overlap and lose actions, but instead I miraculously managed to squeeze between his ship and my middle ship perfectly. Ridiculous.

As mentioned, he took K-turns with all of his BHs and Mauler moved hard 2 facing the rear of my ship-less BH. I took some pretty useless shots at long range, and he finished off my ship-less BH (which was kind of a relief as it was weird to fly an empty baseplate around).

Mauler got a little aggressive, because that's what he does, and took some damage off my middle ship (I think he finished stripping the shields off). Then I got a great shot off on him to kill his stealth device and deliver a double damage crit, and my other BH got a nice range 3 hit on him to finish him off. I needed that, a lot.

A couple more turns had be turn my ships around and regroup. He got into my hull a bit on the rear BH, but then he came on aggressively with one BH and split his squad thinking I was going to go one direction with one ship when I went the other. I managed to finish off the Firespray (seen with the TL below) that I had done some work on at the start of the game.

He delivered a crit to take my injured BH down to PS 0 and it already had 2 hull left and one less agility than normal, so I started running away from him and shifting things so my fully healed ship would take more of the brunt of attacks. We called time with his final BH down two shields (but still sporting an HLC) and me with my limping BH and a fully healed BH left. I would say it's pretty even odds at that point how things would turn out, and it would have been interesting to finish out but we wanted to get in a second game before the night's end.

Enjoyable. Thx.

Surprised there wasn't more bumping with so many big ships on the field

This is pretty impressive! This game sometimes, huh?

Interesting battle. That's a lot of Bounty Hunters!

I have no way to tell who is who here, but it was an exciting read none the less.
