Bounty Hunter with HL and 5 Academy Ties

By berusplants, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Finding this combination pretty tough to beat. Ties engaging and blocking the opponents whilst the Firespray blasts away from a distance with the HL.

Tried 2RedXs and 2GreenAs with assault missiles but as often seems to be the case, this came to naught, one missile didnt hit anything, and the other never even got fired, it was all but over in a few moves. Chewy with gunner/Falcon plus two Ion-Cannoned Gold Ys came much closer, but it still wasn't exactly close, Using one of the Ys to block the Firespray worked well, and even got it Ionised once, but in the end there are too many hard to hit hull points to work though.

Anyone got any suggestions about how to defeat this build? Han-shoots first type build with two Xs the only way to go?

Lots of Assault Missiles?

Well I tried a couple and it wasn't that effective. There is also a Battle Report Video on the front page with someone trying Assault missile clad Awings against a swarm and it didnt fare too well. My impression is that they dont generally work as well as the 5 points might lead you to hope.

Try this

Total Squad Points: 100

Pilot: Red Squadron Pilot 1

X-Wing (23)

Upgrades:

R2-D2 (4)

Pilot: Red Squadron Pilot 2

X-Wing (23)

Upgrades:

R2 Astromech (1)

Pilot: Chewbacca

YT-1300 (42)

Upgrades:

Determination (1) Millenium Falcon (1)Gunner (5)

It punches out firepower and Chewie will take some killing. Use the Evade ability on Chewie if he's taking serious fire from ties or focus to really land those 360 hits.

Based on PS as well, you will move last and fire all your ships before theirs.

Seems reasonable. Surely no point having Determination with Chewy though as he cant take criticals? or am I missing something.

Missiles take a bit of luck, this is true. It's a very all-in kind of build that has the potential to go very right, or very wrong. If you can get a single hit on any TIE with all 3 Assault Missiles, you've just vaporized everything within range 1 of the target - which could be the entire swarm. I'm thinking 3 TIE Advanced with Assault Missiles and relevant upgrades would be better than any number of A-Wings.

Alternatively, you might consider someone with a high PS that's able to drop Seismic Charges. If you can wait until wave 3, try Boba Fett with Anti-Pursuit Laser and Proton Bombs / Seismic Charges, and have him charge directly at the swarm.

Determination let's you discard the card completely so no damage is taken at all :-)

IF you can hit them early Assault missile may be more effective. But that is a big IF.

I say it may be effective if that mini-swarm is within range 1 of the Firespray. The downfall of the Assault Missile is that it can miss a TIE fighter all too often but against a Firespray you should have a much better chance of just hitting. Once hit you just hope that some of those fighters are still within range 1 of the big ship.

Englishpete is right; both Determination and Chewie's pilot ability go off simultaneously, so if a pilot crit comes up you get to choose whether to discard it or simply flip it face down. Pretty slick. (Hint: there is never a reason to flip those pilot Crits it you have Determination)

As to the original post my first inclination is to fight fire with fire, or rather fires pray with fire spray. But if you want to keep it Rebel I'd see where 4 X-wings takes you. You could try to spam the Bounty Hunter with Proton Torpedoes because he's going to try to stay out of range. Or you could try the Shield Upgrade Rookies.

Or there's my personal favorite, Wedge Antilles (Proton Torpedoes) and Horton Salm (Proton Torpedoes 2x, Ion Cannon Turret). That's 71 points, so you can pick your third ship and the upgrades for Wedge and Horton. I suggest a Rookie Pilot and throw Push the Limit and an R2 Astromech on Wedge. What is that, 4 points left to play around with? Of I were going to stay Rebel, that's probably what I would try. I'd gun for the Firespray first, then let Horton and his turret clean up the TIEs.

I would also set up asteroids so that the opponent can't come straight at you. You've gotta make them turn or bank, preferably through the asteroids. Since your high-skilled pilots set up last this shouldn't be too hard to do.

But you're right, it's a tough squad no matter how you slice it.

If you use assault missiles use either push the limit lando or squad leader so you can focus and target lock. Han will even allow a re roll. Also be sure to target bounty hunter with it as its one last evade.

Personally I like this dual falcon build that was posted on the board http://x-wing.voidstate.com/view/19057/2-falcon-build. The BH list can easily take a falcon down in one pass so make sure not to fly straight at it and play the edges making him move through asteroids.

Ill have to entertain both the Slave 1 build and the one right above me with two Falcons.

Good thing with this build is that the 5 Ties are enough to engage whatever you got and you can keep Slave one back a couple of spaces, with the HL you just as effective from Range 3. I've been thinking the four Y-wing build will work, hide in the asteroids and make the swarm come to you, hit them everywhere with the ion cannons and making them crash into the rocks (best thing ever), then send one Y with R2D2 after slave one to block him out good firing positions. Once the swarm is depleted, send everything after Firespray. Might work.

I love this list and really wanted to try it at GenCon but couldn't work it up fast enough. I was happy to see it do well as it made the cut to 16. Unfortunately, I beat it in the first top 16 match with a Chewbacca, Wedge, Biggs build but only because time was called. Had this match went the distance I would have easily lost as it was down to my Chewbacca with 3 hull left to his full health BH. Lon (the player running it) did a great job blocking me but got his BH turned around mid-game and wasn't able to get him back into the fight until time was almost called.

The list reminds of the Moria scene in Fellowship of the Rings... "Oh look, they have a Cave Troll.."

Hearing that Lon made it to top16 with that list makes me feel better about losing to it at our Regionals event. I brought Wedge, Biggs and two Gold Squadron Pilots with Ion Cannon Turrets. I rushed in to avoid the HLC to good effect, but I had a traffic jam with his TIEs that hurt me more than it did him. I look forward to our next meeting.

never rush a swarm, its always so punishing, sure you miss out on the extra 1 dice from the BH. but instead you get 5 extra dice from the ties and some blocking...

Sound advice. But his TIEs were further away from his Bounty Hunter. We were set up in the corner closest to the Firespray, so we gunned for him, and his TIE's were stuck for a round because our point of contact had the big asteroid between us and the TIEs. It was perfect until the following rounds when I just kept running into his PS1 pilots. Tough squad, but I probably could have played smarter. It was so long ago that I don't remember many of the details.
