Bow object question from the City expansion

By surferthanos, in Talisman Rules Questions

Hello,

Just wondering if I am understanding the Bow correctly. It states, "At the start of battle, you may roll one die and add the result to your attack score."

Also since it is not weapon, listed as object only, I assume you can use a weapon with this?

Example, playing the Troll has a printed strength value of 6, has the Greatsword for +2 and the magic belt for +1. That is a total of 9 then he rolls for the bow and adds that score. Then he gets to roll one die for the normal battle sequence?

Of course, you need gold to use this item effectively for an extended period of time.

Yep, it's not a weapon, it's 1 gold for +1 die in combat.

can the bow be used against the assassin for a +1 die roll or does the assassin can not roll take priority?

There are many reasons why the Assassin has no effect over the Bow.

1) Bow die roll happens "at the start of battle", which is a vague wording that is safe to assume that's equal to "before you engage in battle". Battle has not begun, so the Assassin's ability is not working yet.

2) The Assassin ability says that the victim of assassinate "cannot roll a die to add to his Strength". Bow adds to the attack score (so does Bolster Spell).

Besides any oddities and inconsistencies in old or new wordings, assassinate works on the attack roll only (= the die you roll in combat to add to your Strength and determine attack score).

I disagree. See the other thread. Ask FFG for the answer. We are only speculating!

Noticed your answer after I wrote mine.

I've only suggested some reasons based on the wording and a specific interpretation of it. Your argument about the spirit of the Assassin's ability (backstabbing unaware victims) is not very strong, besides the quoting of the Flail which is confusing (perhaps you always meant the Bow?). The Assassin's ability lost part of its resemblance to reality when it was extended to all Enemies and not only faceup Enemies, so I won't call upon realism and spirit of the ability to sort the matter.

Of course we're only speculating here, FFG has to give the answer how to interpret the vague wording of cards they published.
