What to buy next?

By Tridiseth, in X-Wing

Hi all,

Well its been 4 days since i bought the core set and i'm completely and utterly addicted to this game. What i'd like to know is what should i buy to ensure i have a good selection of ships to maintain fair battles. I went a bit mental in the store (encouraged by my 3 year old) and this is what i currently have;

2 x X wing (one from expansion)

3 x Tie Fighter (one from expansion)

2 x A wing

2 x Y wing

2 x Tie Interceptor

1 x Tie Advanced

Slave-1

Millennium Falcon

Any advice would be great :)

If get:

2x core set, just for the ships

2x Y-Wing

2x tie int

1-2 slave 1, the 3 BH list is fun

1 Falcon.

With these pluse what you already have, you could fly most squads. It will also set you up so you can focus in the wave 3 ships when they come out.

Everyone has there own tastes. If your starting out small then you're good. I've found that people like to run Tie Fighter Swarms; so: 6 to 8 Tie Fighters.

Other wise

  • 1 Tie Advanced is fine.
  • Up to 4 X-Wings
  • Y and A wings are okay. You can expand if you play looks like it needs that. For now play them as support until you know for sure.
  • Tie Interceptors - some love to field these guys. Again I'd start with 1 or 2 and see how your play goes. I have 4 (four)
  • Slave-1 and millennium Falcon. Purely a matter or taste and game style. Many love these ships and have 2 of each. Flying the MF thougth is often simplistic and actually takes away from the game. I play for fun not tourney so we never field more than 1 (one) of either. So if your asking or playing with me, 1 or each MAX. Need one of each for the cards though.

For what it's worth, just my 2 (two) cents.

Excellent thanks Pitsch

P.S. Yes I agree a second core is better then 3 more X-Wing expansions.

Extra dice, etc...

Thanks Ken. Great Active forum this!

I think at least another core set looks like a good idea then. I'm pretty happy that my fleet is shaping up OK other than that now though. I was worried that i'd gone mental in the shop in the wrong direction.

Second core then wait and see.

That will push you to five TIEs which, when combined with an Advanced or Interceptor as leaders, can lead to an acceptable swarm. It also pushes you up to 3 X-Wings which should be enough for most play as you have the Y and A if you need a fourth ship. Perhaps most importantly you get another set of dice as you'd often find yourself wanting more than three and the extra set of range/movement templates lets each side have access without sharing as much.

My advice: try to limit how much financial advice you take from 3-year-olds. :)

Welcome to the forums... seems like you've got a decent set to get started and have some fun already!

That is amazing advice but have you seen how 3 year olds negotiate?

Yes, I agree with above. I was basing my suggestions on your list.

Get a second core first, then see how you play. I bought a good mixture because we play at my house and I supply the game. I ended up a variety, though not nearly as much as many others.

Even though this games isn't MtG or Hero-Clicks it still can add up.

Okay. I'm finna buy today and have't tryed it yet. I can see lot of different suggestions but what it look like everyone is agreeing on is that you need 2 core sets. So now my quick question. What would be best as a total rookie for the first buy. 2 x core or 1 x core plus 2 expansions? And in case of the last what two expansions?

May I kick the horse too? My collection is based on being able to field both sides for casual game nights and having balanced options for both sides. If you are not planning on making an immediate run at Regionals I would suggest periodically taking it up a notch to add depth to your games, rather than preordering 4x Lambdas or such.

Step 1:

2x Core Sets

1x Xwing Expansion

1x TIE Expansion

-Basic Minimum Core Game

Step 2:

1x TIE Advanced Expansion

1x Awing or 1x Ywing

-Adds options or variety to core game

Step 3:

1x Firespray

1x YT-1300

Or,

1-2x Awing/Ywing (preference)

1-2x TIE Interceptors

-Upping your game

Step 4:

Consider which other ships to add to keep your games balanced.

I think it depends on what you want to run-- Rebel or Imperial? Big ships or swarm? If you just generally want to build both armies, then two cores is a good place to start.

If you want to focus on one or the other, then you'll probably only want two cores first if you are going TIE swarm. Otherwise, go Core plus expansions.

If you are playing Rebels, definitely the X-Wing expansion for Wedge.

I supply the game for my group of friends. I went in with 2 core sets and 1 of each Wave 1 expansion. I started right around the time Wave 2 hit and I got 3 A-Wings, 3 TIE Interceptors, a Firespray 31 and a YT-1300.

Since then I've picked up another X-Wing, bringing my total to 4, and then 2 more TIE Fighters bringing my total to 7. I'm planning to end up with 2 of each small ship in Wave 3, possibly 3 of the B-Wing and TIE Bomber. Can't decide if I want 1 or 2 Lambda Shuttles.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just purchased 2 x core set and 1 Y wing. Everything else is sold out except for wave 2 ships. So I might just start with this and then see if I need an extra Y wing and if I need 1 or 2 of each expansion.

Ok going to buy this game soon. But can only get one core set for now and maybe one or two expansions. What expansions should I buy. Thanks

Save money, wait, buy Wave 3 ships once available, save more money, wait again, buy the reprints of the wave 1 expansions and throw in a total of atleast 2 core sets in between if you haven't already.

I just started recently. Buy the core and the a wing and tie interceptor expansion. You can find all rather easily now and not pay over msrp.

Wish I could find a y wing where I am.

I just picked one up today at B&N. They also had the other wave 1 expansions and I might go back for my third TIE x1 if the bug catches me. I'm currently sitting on:

2x Core

2x X-Wing

3x Y-Wing

3x A-Wing

2x YT-1300

2x TIE Fighter

2x TIE Advanced

3x TIE Interceptor

2x Firespray 31

Wave 3 Pre-order:

3x B-Wing

2x HWK 290

2x TIE Bomber

2x Lambda

I'd like to get a minimum of 3 of each class, but after that I have no clue where to go. Should prolly just wait for the Tsunami wave, my wallets already in witness protection.
