GM Holocron/organization

By Keeop, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Regarding npc organization and stat blocks. I've seen a few mediocre examples here but nothing I'm in love with yet. How are you guys organizing your table-side reference? Laptops or tablets? Old school via notebook? Fate-style with index cards? I ultimately want to create something that will let me efficiently pull up npc's, ships, and rogue events on the fly with easy edit functionality and I'm basically buzzing around for inspiration. This has been a pretty easy task with other games, but for some reason npc info in Edge can border on beefy depending on the character.

I tend to organize on my Windows 8 Surface Pro Tablet, its very useful and allows my to keep copies of character sheets, maps, and notes at the touch of the screen through skydrive. I also can release info through skydrive to other players if they have their own phones/tablets with them, to keep certain things secret only to players taht make their role or request something in private.

I startet on a NPC list (.odt) and would like to transfer it to my IPad. The problem is that I can't find an app and a document format which would show the pictures on the Ipad. Only way is to export it as PDF.

I'm using Evernote (which I have explained a little in the google+ SW:EotE GM Group https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/110312701971277509601)

Most note taking apps are handy and sufficient, but what I like about Evernote is the ability to use the dice symbols font, and to add checkboxes. My notes about NPCs just became the play tool as well! I tried a google doc spreadsheet (and I still use that as my "database" ) but I couldn't use the fonts and it doesn't really do checkboxes. Yeah, you can fiddle around and approximate them, but who has that kinda time?

I am using my trusty laptop as my GM screen (although he actual GM screen is not far, I just don't sit behind it) since I find working with a tablet at the table just a bit too clunky to keep the action going. I've been making an effort to cut down on my paper use, and this is the first workflow I've come up with that actually works for me.

I hadn't even considered Evernote. That's a clever idea. Being able to use the dice symbol font would really open up a ton of choices. I have the individual icons saved as image files but I haven't seen an actual font file yet.

I'm not sure what form it will take yet, but I have to build some kind of NPC portfolio - bounty hunter, thug, pickpocket, bartender, cab driver, policeman and so on. I'll probably do it on the 3x5 notecards or something - not sure yet.

so far I'm thinking sections for minion, rival, nemesis, ships, and rogue/random encounters. Even in the middle of a published adventure I like to let the group wander. Being able to pull up quick, fun little things in-between story-arc locations blends the two playstyles together nice.

So far I've run one sample adventure for my wife that I wrote, so I wrote it in a Google Doc and pulled it up on the iPad while I was running the adventure.

Now, however, I've made some more NPCs using character sheet PDFs so I'll have those with me as well.

The first adventure I ran, I printed out some blank NPC templates that somebody on the forum here had made, and used those. I think I need to come up with something a bit more organized. I might try something like Evernote. I usually keep my game notes in MS Word form, and bring it up on my iPad, that works pretty well.

I could swear I found the font on this very board, but it's possible it was posted to the google+ group instead: http://rapid-search-engine.com/?s=cache:84260383:symbol

It makes a WORLD of difference! Now I just need to glance at it, no simple math required! I tried the image files too but the font beats it, although I had to spend a minute coloring the icons before I saved the note.

p.s. there are a couple other fonts available too, such as our own aramis' page: http://aramis.hostman.us/sw/

p.p.s. - you can't install fonts on iDevices, so if you intend to use Evernote for this purpose on say, an ipad, you're going to have a new hurdle.

I'll be on a Kindle Fire HD, or some laptop running Linux or Windows. I appreciate the hookup very much! Thank you.

You're quite welcome. I'm interested to know how this works for you, and if it does, perhaps you'd be willing to contribute to a shared Evernote notebook for these sorts of things. The idea is in its infancy but I'm positive I'm not the first guy to have this idea so I'm going to do some research and exercise some brain cells to get a framework together.
