You might not get that Ultima Segmentum location :/

While reading through the beta announcement again I noticed this:

Since the newly introduced Askellon Sector exists alongside the more familiar Calixis Sector, owners of the previous edition can adapt their new campaigns to include elements of both settings!

It means it doesn't invalidate anything about the Calixis Sector info, meaning you can still use all the setting stuff from the 1e books.

At least that's how I read it - not sure how you could read it any other way

Urgh ! If they are not going to open up access to 'nids and Tau, why bother changing Sectors? It will take years for the new location to build up as much background detail as Calixis; if you aren't going to make big changes, then you are just loosing detail and gaining... what, exactly?

@MILLANDSON:

I interpret the word "alongside" as "next to."
Why say Calixis stuff can atill be used for its fluff, then say it can be used "alongside" Askellon? Why be redundant? Why say the same thing twice in the announcement?

A cranky Warp storm threatens to devour the entire sector. 'Nids won't go because it risks biomass. Tau won't go because they're not stupid, and Eldar should be thin on the ground for the same reason.

Prior, the announcement says 2e is not compatible with 1e, "However..."

the background and setting material from all first edition books can certainly continue to provide valuable plot hooks and campaign ideas. Since the newly introduced Askellon Sector exists alongside the more familiar Calixis Sector, owners of the previous edition can adapt their new campaigns to include elements of both settings!

I agree that in this particular context, Alongside normally would be interpreted the same as the Spinward Front, or the Koronus Expanse. As in "the map next door".

I'm kind of inclined to agree with Millandson at this point, going to reserve judgement until we hear more. Ultimately it doesn't bother me though, it's easy to bend fluff to suit your group's desires, or just go ahead and make up your own sector, a task that's pretty easy thanks to Stars of Inequity.

I agree in that it doesn't bother me either, even if we do move to edition 2.0, I had no intention of leaving the Calixis Sector behind. A couple of Inquisitors already have a couple of Hooks there for the Tyranids [attacking where people least expect!] and I actively dislike the Tau, so I doubt I am even going to include them in my games.

I still would love a campaign, where the Inqusition ist "forced" to cooperate with the Eldar or Tau.

Great potential for roleplaying.

From what I interpret, 2E is set in "modern day" 40k. The original lines were set several centuries prior (War of Armageddon hadn't happened yet, etc). Since we all know if any writer attempts to move canon forward Games Workshop has them dragged from their homes and hung, I'm not surprised they made a new sector.
Still, I'm let down. I love the Calixis sector and all that I read from the "MYSTERIOUS WARP STORM THAT HERALDS DOOM" was "Tyrant's Star".

They could have kept the Calixis Sector setting, moved forward a century, added the Warp Storm of Doom to the setting, and preserved 90% of the existing setting details (a very useful time-saver for GMs). Instead, they are losing a lot of detail, maintaining the main drawback of the Calixis Sector (i.e. some icon baddies exist only on the opposite side of the galaxy), and gaining... well, what, exactly? Nothing that couldn't have been done in Calixis (especially with a time-change), as far as I can tell...

I was already planning on creating my own Ultima Segmentum sector for my next campaign, but an 'official' one would have saved me a lot of time. Oh well...
