A-Wings with Assault Missiles vs the TIE Swarm

By Stormtrooper721, in X-Wing Battle Reports

The third battle in this 3 battle batrep has Jim's Green Squadron A-Wings with Assault Missiles vs my 8 TIE swarm:

I'm wondering if the A-wings would have been better with Dutch handing out TL for those missiles?

Before even watching this video I am guessing the A-Wing lost horribly.

Well they got close I guess. But why in the hell do people keep flying into your swarm. I dont understand why they havent changed their losing ways. Flying headfirst into a swarm is a loss. If he went slow, and made you have to go in after him into the asteroids he would have a much better chance as you are split up and can not focus fire. Asteroids are the Rebellions friend in this game. I hope you guys are reading this. I want to see Stormtrooper beat already. Sry ST.

Maybe someday ST will be defeated.. .maybe when those B(Beast)-Wings roll off the reb assembly lines...

I dunno. Hes got those **** tie's on lock. I'm hoping they use better tactics.

I mean crap, they're getting on average 2 kills total a game out of 8 ties. Hes not just winning but embarrassing them lol.

Maybe a little more time would enable the swarm to be defeated. That seems like it could have been the case in that final battle.

Totally. Time was called because league games are one hour and we finished the round we were on. Jim just needed to take out two TIEs and he did get one and all the rest were severely damaged. One of his A-Wings had no shields left and one had one. Two A-Wings with little or no shields vs four badly damaged TIEs - it could have gone either way.

true, they do seem to roll some mad kills. ST, you sure those boys are 731st trainee's?

Actually, the number of blanks I roll is incredibly high - you can hear me complain in several videos about my incredibly bad rolling - but I get to roll so much that it balances out.

In most games my TIEs shoot forward once I'm just outside range 3 so that the next turn we'll immediately be in the close range 1 fight where my 8 TIEs get three attacks each for 24 attack dice! A third of them often miss and another third are evaded but even then 8 damage may get through and this is where my opponents start to melt away. I've even had bad turns where I have 11 attack dice and miss with everything but then have a good turn to balance it out.

Sheer volume of firepower, not accuracy, wins the day for my TIE pilots. Great gunners they are not but quantity has a quality all of its own.

When you put it that way it may be all about position. The TIEs still out number the A's by the same 2:1 advantage they started with except weren't the As out of missiles now. At that point it may have all come down to who has superior position.

See, if you are playing Rebels, you MUST!!!! not fly into the swarm. If you do at this point in the game you are kinda naive. I was going to say something a bit more harsh but bit my tongue. Stormtrooper is running them perfectly, but I garuntee you, with my 5 ship rebel build he will never get 8 shots off in a round. He probably wont even get 4 shots off in a round until round 3 maybe 4. I will make him come to me and i will fly around the board evading and hiding behind asteroids until his squadron is blown to the five winds. Then I attack. Using this strategy I have yet to be beat. Does that mean thats all I do, no, but your opponents need to learn how to win fast or they will start to get despondent. And despondent players dont play for long.

It's tricky to use the asteroids the way you describe when there's a time limit. But it's still the best strategy because at least you have the chance at a modified win. I know Wookie Hunter sounds like a broken record, but his advice is sound.

I'll share a short story. On one game night I brought 2 Tempest Sq. Pilots w/ Concussion Missiles and 4 Academy Pilots. First round the opposing TIE squad ran headlong into mine. There was no strategy, just luck, and I lost just enough for my opponent to have a full win. Next game I crushed a 4 Y-wing squad, but that list got walked on all night, so no big deal.

The last game was against Luke with 3 Rookies. I learned from my mistake in the first game and decided that running straight at 4 Rookies would be suicidal. So we meandered through and around the asteroids slowly, using Barrel Roll to keep good lines and to help slow our approach. At first contact no one fighter of mine was in the arc of all his ships, but most of mine had a bead on Luke (which in hindsight was a poor target choice). Man, formations went out the window and there was some really tight flying, but at the end of an hour not a single ship was lost from either side - complete draw. If I hadn't ducked through the asteroids I would have lost a TIE for sure, but we managed to survive. Not a true victory, but I'm proud of myself for adapting to the situation.

If I had 8 TIE fighters I probably would have risked the frontal assault. You've got to pick your battles and use the terrain.
