apocalypse X-Wing style?

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

ok, if anyof you have read some of my posts in other threads then you might have heard me say this before.

i am not a tournament player, probably never will, but i am a collector and a gamer. i have litteral collected thousands of dollars worth of miniatures from battletech, warhammer 40k, star wars, d&d, and so on.

what i like is huge battles, the 40k apocalypse battles are days i look forward to, so that being said, why not release capital ships in x-wing for non-tournament large battles for fan boys like myself. i know there others out there that have thought of this as well.

instead of having just 1 ship card, the capital ship will have a ship card and then turret cards each with fire arcs. the best chance fighters would have is to blast the turrets leaving the ship with no teeth.

it would be a nice change of pace for the game.

and those of you thinking to argue about game balance, in a large scale game its more about cenimatics and fun than game balance.

please let me know that im not the only one out there that has wanted this.......

i will feel so alone

I enjoy playing the odd tourney here and there. However like your self I really enjoy themed games that tell a story. Campaigns where I can track the progress of the army/ warband/ squadron etc. I even build most of squadrons in X-wing with a theme or story in mind. With that said I would like to see some kind of larger ships introduced in to the game in the range of corvette sized ships. Sadly the scale for X-wing makes anything the size of a Star Destroyer just way too big for the average gaming table.

However I'm hoping that with rules licensed to Wiz-Kids for Star Trek, FFG will come out with a Starwars capital ship miniatures game (Clone wars or Galactic Civil war era) with smaller miniatures or tokens(you know how much FFG love tokens) to represent squadrons of fighters, with some nice models for the capital ships.

While it would be awesome, in order to keep scale, which seems to be a major priority for this line, even one of the smaller star destroyer class ships would have to be at least six feet long. Even without the massive price tag that monster would have, where would you store the dang thing? The cool factor would be undeniable but I just don't see it ever happening, at least not officially. I've seen at least on thread, either here or on BBG, can't recall which, where someone was working on a pretty nice to scale one out of a mix of plywood and some other things.

I'm all for themed battles and such, club gaming, etc...but, man do I love me some tournaments! To each his own!

The capital ship rules I made over on BGG were designed for this purpose. The ships themselves are scaled down to perform realistically on a 3'x3' table, but the tools are there to have them in the background shooting at fighters or each other.

One idea I had was to run a campaign and have one mission result be a rebel Nebulon-B fighting an Imperial Nebulon-B2. Now that TIE bombers are coming out this will be much easier to have a balanced scenario.

100 points 1 on 1 gets old real quick. I definitely prefer scenarios, team battles, free for all, etc... Definitely try Norsehounds capital so rules. We don't play with larger than the rebel cr90. But I'm also working on an Imperial gunship.

This.

Although fighting a star destroyer would be an awfully fun way to pass an afternoon, the logistics just don't work. The ship would be 6 ft long to be to scale. It would be the table instead of being on the table.

What would work is a corvette sized class of ship. Those come in at around 18 - 25 inches long and that is a size that can fit on a table.

I've posted on the dream products thread for a corvette class boxed set with reversible gameboards of a CR90 corvette (one side rebel and the other side empire) and another board with a Vigil class corvette (one side undamaged and the other wrecked). Add in some weapon systems cards and commander pilots and you have a nicely geared boxed set promoting large ship, fleet intercepts.

I have already mocked up ship boards and have used them in engagements.

Take a look at what I'm talking about:

There are fan rule on boardgame geek and scenarios using the smaller of the capital ships.

FFG, please make a boxed set of corvette class ships as I have been suggesting.

im not understanding why you dont just buy the old Star Wars Battles ships, (albeit kinda crappy). They are probably the closest youll ever get to Capital ship combat anytime soon. And yes, you must use a revised rules set to make it work. Ive got over 200 ships for that game and with the new rules it isnt too bad.

I have reworked the rules even further than the authors on BGG so if ya want em just let me know.

Wow! Those are great. I firmly believe that capital ships should be printed graphics on a flat card for this game. Making actual miniatures look nice, but what you have here is actually playable. Want!

I mostly curious about what its like to play really large games of x-wing with 300+ points per side between multiple players. What are good increments for expanding the board? Should it be 4' long instead of 3'? Play with 2' of width for every hundred points? And how long do those games actually take and how do you speed it up?

Ill tell you one thing its crowded unless you go a lot bigger.

That's okay, the rules-set was intended to handle any ship larger than a YT-1300 up to Nebulon-Bs. This includes CR90s, Assasin Corvettes, System Patrol Craft, BFF-1s, other large cargo ships, space installations, and so on. Only thing is you would need to come up with the specific stats for the ship yourself though I do have some ship templates to use as a guide. I don't have many capital ships up for testing/use with the rules yet.

I have played a 2v2 team battle where each player brought 75 points worth of ships, so in total it was 150 points for each side. We played this on a 4v3 board and it was plenty big enough to support 300 total points, I would think for 300+ points per side you would probably want to move up to a 5x4 or 6x4 board.

Next weekend we have a team battle planned, I expect it to be 800 to 1000 points total on the board.

where could i get ahold of these rules?

very interested.

We play on a pool table that we roll out black felt over. We use the flat capital ships actually the same images. We had x-wing ships card around the entire perimeter of the pool table. We had about twenty ships and four players. Played in five hours. It is very fun.

These capital ship rules look cool. I just wish I had the crafting skills to make the real ships like you guys did.
