Expansions; new races?

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

With the explorer book coming up is there any news about whether or not new races will be published and, if so, what possible new playable races do you expect?

The guy on the cover is a Chiss so that is a dead give away, but what else?

I would love to see Jawa's return as a playable race and think Gamorean's (all brawl, no brain) might be interesting as well!

Frankly, I kinda hope they offer some guidelines on how to best create your own races. It is an explorer book after all.

Much as I love the little stinkers, I am not sure the galaxy is ready for Jawas as a playable species.

I do think a set of species creation guidelines would be an excellent addition.

I am currently prepping my first game as GM, and foolishly told my players I'd happy to develop stats for any races they want to play. They're currently suggesting (I kid you not) a Toydarian, a Jawa and a Gungan.

Wow, just wow. I'm sorry. That's all I got.

Our group currently is 4 humans. I Think it's the first Star Wars game I've ever played that didn't have at least one alien character.

Not a fan of the EU then I gather?

Haven't seen enough of the EU to know. Where do Jawas feature in it?

They are rather rare off of Tatooine. There are a few planets they've migrated to - mostly large scrapyards and/or desert worlds. They get out more than Ewoks, but they're certainly not as widely exposed to the rest of the galaxy as most of the PC races.

There is quote a few Jawa out there. Most of the adventurers are either outcasts or the only survivors of their tribes.

One even grew to being a Jedi.

I never understood why someone would look at a setting with a billion aliens, and then play a human. That's just so... boring to me.

Partly because the Empire is racist towards non-humans, so you need at least one human in the party to deal with them.

Unless you play to play beyond the heart of the Empire, going to places where humans are the minority. Such places can be found along the edges of the Empire.

I had one player who played humans only, in every game we played. Said had twenty years experience being a human and none with the other types. Kind of hard to argue with that logic.

Races are pretty much comprised of 300xp. With a little wiggle ranging from 295 to 305. Only the Droid seems to beak that common build, but I'm sure has it's own benefit.

Most racial abilities seemed to be charged 5xp.
Claws 5xp
regeneration 5xp
resistence to heat/arid environments 5xp
Human Non-Career skill 5xp(both count to 10xp)
and so on.
It seems the Droid ability to have 6pts in upgrades compensate that they are a 220xp character.

each modifier of Wound/Strain seems to be also another +-5xp based on the value of 10.
So a Wound of 11+Brawn(5xp) and a Strain of 9+Will(-5xp) balance each other out.

whatever left is the racial +### spendable XP

The unofficial Menagerie of Star Wars races are mostly pretty good. I would use most races without adjustments, but i felt they missed on the XP modifier for Wound/Strain. As some of Wound/Strain tend to push the 295-305xp range to more and less. As an example I think the Chiss would push up to 315.

I wrote this a couple of weeks ago after noticing a theme. I posted this on RPG net, then some one linked the menagerie :D I do not claim this is 100% accurate.

EDIT: Thanks for clarification from HappyDaze in regards to the Droid Skills :), and Enrik Tenebrous for suggesting the Droid Resistance should be set to 20. Taking these into account really get's the Droid race closer to 300. Much appreciated input.

These are the starting notes to determine the EotE base XP and expenditure. This is a resource to be able to build custom races or tinker to ones content.

* It seems that skills, talents and small race benefits are being given a 5xp average.
* 300 points is not solid as many seem to be 305 not just 300. Taking suggestion as to why that is :)
* I take note of more guessed costs by not adding to the total and marking with ‘*’

I'm not sure what you mean by "Career and Spec base skill ranks dropped to 1" in your Droid entry.

Sorry those are all just notes. There is no verbose break down of details.

Under the droid rules, Droids don't get 4 points for Career Skills, or 2 points for Specialization skills. They get 1 point for Careers and 1 point for Specializations. "For Careers and Specializations the starting 4 and 2 skill points are reduced to 1 for each". I just make a quick note on it :D

No Jawa? WHAT! My Jawa PC makes perfect sense. Our group started EotE with the Beginner game, in which I played Pash, and that game takes place mainly on Tatooine. When we switched to the full game and created our own characters the backstory of my Jawa included being taken on as a ship mechanic and eventual protege to Pash. He found me sad and angry drinking in the Cantina after the Empire abducted the rest of my clan to some moon to salvage battle droids.

The fact that Jawa are physically incapable of speaking Basic and not many people speaking Jawaese has made things somewhat more difficult at times, but my group has a "Protocol" Droid player. He is fluent in over 6 million forms of communication, it seems he is best with Aggressive Communications though with his 5 Agi and 4 Ranks in Ranged(Heavy).

Jeyderu, you are off to a good start, but I see a few flaws around. Not all talents should be weighed equally. Enduring (the droid talent) is rare, and never found below the 20 EXP threshold. Thus, it should be given more weight than the more common ones that you might find on other races. You also forget that droids can't be mind tricked, they don't need to eat, breathe, drink, or sleep. Those are all REALLY major things, and all of that together more than makes up for the discrepancy in EXP.

I also don't think Wounds and Strain are given equal weight. Toughened gives +2 wounds and Grit gives +1 Strain. Wound thresholds go up to 14 but I've never seen a starting Strain threshold go above 12. I suggest that you make each wound point cost 1/2 the cost of 1 Strain point (with 2 equaling 5 Experience.)

Also, some abilities are given more weight. The Wookiee's rage is incredibly strong, so it seems to count more towards the EXP threshold.

Having a higher/lower Brawn and Agility scores is also given a little bit of extra weight as well. The Rodian, who has a 3 in agility and a 2 in Brawn, gets a talent and a skill, with 10 and 10. The Twi'lek, who has a 1 in Brawn and a 2 in Agility, gets 11 Strain, a choice between two skills, and the heat resistance. All and all, that is a little bit heavier than the one skill and a basic talent, since a low brawn means a lower wound threshold.

I'm not sure if you're just writing it weird or if I'm misunderstanding, but droids get 6 career skill picks (rather than 4) and 3 specialization skill picks (rather than 2), so they get more skills than others not less.

doh, thanks you. I was wondering what I was reading :D.. that balances up the discrepency by 15 more points. Super appreciate the the clarification :) I mis-read and was under the impression that the Droid only get's 1 Skill Point for each :D

Well the new Exploerer book is going to at least have Chiss in it because there is one on the cover.

Also unless they do a more imperial minded expansion book for Age of Rebellion, the Explorer book may be the only one it's ever printed in.

I do hope it will have Chiss (and a few other species too), but I've learned not to judge a book by its cover.

I think read somewhere it was going to come with a few new species.
