Weapon Proficiences

By Friend of the Dork, in Only War

Have anyone else noticed that there is no guarantee that the typical guardsman, heavy gunner etc. actually starts with.... Las proficiency? My players chose to play Cadians, but even these who "can strip search a lasgun at the age of 10" might simply miss out by choose SP proficiency or something like that. The same problem applies to Low-tech weapons - you have to choose between being able to use that combat knife or using a secondary weapon such as SP or Launcher.

Does this seem right to you all? I considered simply giving them the proficiency for free, but then everyone will get the SP proficiency as well. Heavy Gunners will get the Low Tech, but the Weapon's Specialist will have to choose it among 3 - so if he want say, Launcher or Flamer, he will have to give it up.

Maybe They should all have SP proficiency anyway from their Regiment, as Autopistol is part of their standard load.

One of my house rules has been that all guardsman specialities start with Weapon Training (Las and SP). It doesn't seem to cause any problems.

It's a quirk of the IG, as by fluff, not all regiments have lasguns- some will have autoguns, simply because they're easier to produce and maintain. there's a lot of give room for how an IG unit can be equipped, so some might have both SP and Las training, some might have one or the other, and the more primitive worlds might go medieval with low-tech. (sorry for the bad pun... ok, not really)

But as the Guard has options and variance, so does the GM with house ruling. If you wanna give SP and Las for free, you can.

Thanks for answers, i decided to just give them the proficiencies. Now the Heavy Gunner has Bolt proficiency and the Weapons Specialist got Bolt in addition to his normal ones +Launcher. The Operator can now use his Autopistol. The game didn't break and we can all breathe relived ;)

That depends on which fluff you're looking at. Codex background explicitly mentions the lasgun as the only universal piece of equipment, specifically because of its ease of maintenance and supply. Where would a regiment equipped with Alcher Mk IV autoguns get their ".44 type c, long" bullets from when it's sent to a warzone tens of thousands of light years away from the only world producing it?

On the other hand, even Codex fluff hinted at instances where newly raised regiments deployed with nothing but bows and spears, simply because somebody in the Munitorum messed up and the scheduled weapons shipment did not arrive in time, or because the troops were required so urgently that someone made the call to skip the Forge World on their trip to the warzone ...

Of course, this might also be an area where the fluff in the Only War books deviates from other sources, so all of the above might not be applicable at all. That being said, does the "Regimental Standard Kit" in the rulebook now always include las weapons?

It includes a laspistol I think, anything else has to be bought or is part of regiment type equipment. But yeah, read about feudal/feral regiments being sent in with bows, arrows, swords and plate armour because that's all they have time to give them before being thrown into battle.
