No Surrender

By Braddoc, in Only War

Hey, a Star fort assault! It looks intresitng, and judging by the cover, there may well be Chaos forces involved.

Anyone else eager to get thier paws on that one? I know I am! It may well prove useful for RT, DH, DW and BC as well, since void assaults play (or well, can) play a part in either of the other games.

I'll be let down if the Dominate fall to Chaos. Whilst it makes some sense for Severus to consort with the Ruinious Powers (and probably foolishly believe he's holding the cards), I'd be disappointed if yet another renegade human faction went down that path. What made the Dominate quite sympathetic and unique as a group was that they're mostly just deluded souls believing they're still fighting for the Emperor and a righteous cause.

If it ends with them splashing themselves in blood and summoning daemons I will be let down, as I believe my players will be. "Suddenly, Chaos Marines alongside the branded-heretic traitor guard" isn't a very good plot twist in 40k.

On the other hand, seeing the Imperial Guard and Dominate forces being forced to work together (or more specifically, The Squad) would make for an interesting twist.

I agree, I also would like to see human adversaries fighting against the Imperium who do not inevitably fall to chaos. I know this is heresy, but just because you don't agree with the ways of the Imperium doesn't mean you're automatically throwing in your lot with the ruinous powers.

Not to mention the idea of being forced to fight alongside your current enemy for mutual benefit sounds like a lot more fun!

On an unrelated note, something that occurred to me while reading the announcement for this: would anyone else find it interesting if the Only War adventures had options based on how successful you were in previous adventures? With the way Only War works it seems like a unique opportunity to throw in some options for the GM in future adventures. For example, suppose the next book concerns the assault on the planet this star fort is protecting. Well let's say your squad all died and their mission on the star fort was a total failure. Maybe the next book could have options the GM could use to show how much worse the fighting is planetside because taking the star fort consumed far more resources than the Guard had planned for. Or the other way around, if you're hugely successful there could be an option for increased resources or some such when you first make planetfall. They could all be optional little pieces, so you're not forced to follow one path or the other and so you're not forced to play every adventure in sequence, but I think given the military campaign nature of Only War it would be a cool element for FFG to introduce.

As they push deeper into the star fort, they face dangers in every form and on every front and they may just find something they never expected.

I really hope this just means something like: "There were some traitor marines in millennia-long stasis in the center of the star fort and now they've woken up."

Because I dunno, they might have gotten captured during the Angevin Crusade and were experimented on instead of killed/handed over to the appropriate channels. And now Severus wants them so he can turn them over to those Chaos emissaries he's been talking to, to get some much-needed assistance. He has to hide that from all but a select few, since largely the Dominate soldiers are not heretics.

Could lead to some strange alliance at the end, where IG and Dominate fight together against the traitor marines and any heretics that joined them.

But most likely the Dominate is being ever more subverted by Chaos...

Ho hum. First it was tunnel fights, now its boarding actions. Once again my treadheads take a hit to their individual reproductive equipment.

Well, given the size of some installations in WH40k, and that they tout it as including all the siege action, I'd say there's a chance that tanks might actually be useful IN the star fort...

Now that would be cool. Get some outsized boarding torpedoes loaded with Demolishers, launch them at sections of the starfort that you hope have lots of room, and watch the carnage. Bonus points when the guns end up breaching the hull! :P

Yeah, wouldn't it? Maybebwe should try writing something like that up ourselves...

With environmentally sealed vehicles you wouldn't even have to care about the gaping hole you entered through, in fact, it would help you by depriving the defender of valuable oxygen. :-D

LOl - actually I'm sure I read on a website that took a serious look at space combat, that the best way to defeat space vehicles was to kill the crew through hull breaches....

Or just shut off the 'gravity plating' and have a couple guys in environmental suits and magboots push the now-floating tanks back out through the holes they came in from... ;)

I fail to see how normal humans are good opponents; they merely want to be Imperium-light, limited to a few systems, easily crushed by any and every, thing coming their way.

That's why the Dominate must be returned to the iron grip of the Imperium!

The orbital bombardments are for their own good, really.

I certainly wonder what the most unexpected thing would be.

The biggest surprise to me would be a sunny beach with azure blue water and all the cool drinks you want - In the middle of the station.

What would be your biggest surprise?

This does indeed look interesting! Looking forward to seeing it.

I must admit I'm not a fan of the Dominate on how their written. I mean their so much like the Guard they have their own regimental creation rules and Not-Commissars. For what is a game based upon regular Joe getting a flashlight and being told to fight against armies of monsters and demons three times his size, Instead, its Joe Bloggs versus Joe Bloggs. half of the time. As much as I would disdain them turning the Dominate to Chaos, if they had originally been written as a formidable power of Lost and Damned I'd have been much more pleased.

Thus far though, I've utilised them as a sort of 'morality hook' in my games. They're not fighting insane monsters, just fellow humans like themselves, many of whom actually worship the Emperor and genuinely believe they're doing His work. Its an interesting twist but at the end of the day, its the Xenos and Chaos people expect to fight.

So far, three of five pre-written adventures have been against the Dominate. Out of all of the 'paid' books (GM Kit, Final Testament, No Surrender) they've exclusively been about the Dominate. I expected a bit more diversity honestly.

Meh. The release of another adventure supplement tells me they're running out of ideas for OW, even though they've claimed in the DH2e announcement that they plan to "support the game for many years to come." With what?

How many of you want another adventure supplement? Not me, thank you.

How many of you would rather have a vehicle supplement? Yes, please!

A vehicle supplement would be nice, especially one with rules for aircraft. That said, this looks fun too. I'm sure they've got room on the schedule for both.

Let's be fair, the GM Kit has the squad eventually going up against Eldar (or, y'know, fleeing in terror from them) and Final Testament is just as much a fight with the orks as it is with the Dominate. More so in many parts, since the Dominate's trying to be subtle. Hardly exclusive...if anything, the orks are the ones with the most screen time. Which makes sense - they are, after all, the orks.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get a B-plot or twist that pits the squad against something other than the Dominate near the end. The shadow over the Guardsman on the cover certainly looks like a Chaos Space Marine, but there's plenty of room for surprises. What if one of the Dominate's leaders on the starfort was one of the Fallen, for instance? The squad gets unexpected support from the Dark Angels throughout the first two acts, ends up being sent in to assist in securing an enemy commander, and suddenly one of their comrades or an NPC takes a bolter round to the back of the head...

Bit disappointed that new supplement is going to be adventure, but hey, if it will be a good one, why not. I just hope that next one will be player handbook for Support Specialists or tank supplement (which I want to be named "What I Cannot Crush With Words" <_< )

Agree with this whole statement. I prefer my Specialists, anyway, but an option that isn't "leave your friends behind while you +5 your critical stat, becoming even more silly" just seems like a good idea. Psyker +5 WP is nice, of course, but I seem to remember people thinking it was cheesy (along with Tech-Priests and +5 Tough or +5 Int).

And Guard in TT often make up for their shortcomings in men with their plethora of tanks, so a "complete" book of such, with some other big guns, Elysian-style jeeps, bikes, and what have you could nicely round things out.

Of course, if the adventure does have some cool stuff in it, that's good, too. One of my absolute favorite RT books is Lure of the Expanse, which is full of awesome, and some nice ship and equipment options. If OW can get an adventure to do that, coolz.

The campaign I am currently writing takes place on an orbital platform where some of the corridors are so large that a warhound can walk freely along them, there is one scene where one actually does considering they are fighting Orks who have built large machines on it so I see no reason why vehicles cant be used.

One thing that disappoints me about this campaign is I started writing mine back in January when the rulebook was released and I thought I was going to make an original scenario. Now the next campaign they release takes place in virtually the same environment.

Hmmmmm could you make magnetic treads? Strap in boys we're going inverted!

I quite like the Dominate but then I have a soft spot for non-chaotic rebels. (I once had a big conspiracy plot in a dark heresy campaign which had the players guessing about it being a subtle chaotic cult, genestealers, Necron Machine Cult, Tau incursion through a worm hole and even internal jockeying for position within the Imperium itself until it was revealed that it was the Demiurg all along! Good times.......)

It has been known that chaos or renegade marines have pretended to be loyalists so I presume that it could be the Dominate's high command has allied with chaos but the lower level people don't. Either that or they are being used as elite strike troops and killing all the witnesses.

I however hope that the dominate is still chaos free (at least as a whole).

Well, it seems the guard will be facing Daemon Engines AND chaos forces..nasty little shocker right there...yet again it was only known to me thanks to that one line in the 2 pages preview....

Kind of a shame, if the Dominate turns out to be infested by Chaos.
I know it was hinted at in several places, but I still think it would be more fun and more ...hmm dramatic?.. if they weren't.

I'll still read it, because the Starfort sounds cool, but I'm hoping they'll follow up with the specialists handbook(s) soon.

In Enemies of the Imperium It specifically states that Chaos cults are a minor faction not directly related to the Severyn dominate (Right now at least). I'm sure that there are any number of Apostates trying to change that right now though! ;)
