I want to get started in x-wing but I am the type of collector who wants to have "it all." My question is how many of each ship do I need to purchase? One for each character card? One of one type of ship and 6 of another. I am a little confused. I have watched th how to play tutorial but that is about it.
Newbie question
It depends on the types of games you'll be playing. For the most part, you want at least 1 ship per Unique Pilot on that ship which would give you 2 Tie advanced, 2 Y-wings, 4 X-wings, 2 A-wings, 3 Tie Interceptors, 6? Tie Fighters. The Big ships you can choose how many you want, i have 3 firesprays and 2 falcons because i like the variety but also because i play alot of Large-scale games.
Generally you won't need anything more than that if you're only playing 100 point games. If you like to go a bit bigger, more ships are helpful. 6 X, 6 A, 3/4 Y, 2 Falcons is pretty good for any large scale battle, 10 Tie fighters, 6 Interceptors, 3 Tie Advanced, 2/3 Firesprays. With this amount of ships you can potentially play 500 point vs 500 points.
If you mainly can play small games though...you'll want to keep your collection a bit smaller. Of course if you really like a particular ship, you can get more of those, but the Rebels won't be fielding more than 4 ships in any given battle so that's pretty much the apex for them. Imperials can field a fair few more, but 6-8 is good enough for the basic tie, and 4 interceptors are good enough.
For most people, it's a good idea to start with one or two core sets and then maybe 1 of each expansion ship. This way, you get enough to try a little of everything and see what you'd like to get more of. But if you want to have it all...
I've seen some people aim for 100 points worth of every ship's minimum cost, i.e. 8 TIE Fighters (12 pts. per Academy Pilot, 96 pts total) or 5 TIE Interceptors (18 pts per Alpha Squadron pilot, 90 pts total), and so on. This way, you'll never be short any particular ship for whatever 100 point squad you want to make.
Of course, if you want to play with more than 100 point squads, the sky's the limit. Well, the sky and FFG's inability to keep up with production demand.
browse further into the forum.... this topic has been posted a few times.. you'll find answers there
for a quick ans.... definitely get 2 Core sets... you'll never go wrong.
Edited by BabloYup, two core sets is a must. For the dice, damage deck, extra set of move templates and some of the included upgrade cards.
I would say 2 core sets and one of each expansion. Then make a decision.
Also consider some ships will become redundant as more waves are released. You may buy 4 x-wings but find you will never fly more that 3 cos you always want an A, Y B, or hawk or falcon in the squad.
Also i bought 2 tie advanced but have only flown 2 a couple of times, this will be even less oftwn now boombers are to be released.
If buying with a friend perhaps just go one faction each to save money.
Final point maybe check out the voidstate squad builder and see what you might want to fly although this is more effective method if youve already played and have a grasp of the game.
