By TRamsey, in X-Wing

Just a couple of repaints to add a little variety.

Where in the canon do the green A-wings come from? I've also seen grey ones.

Also your second photo is a broken link it would seem.

Anyway, they look nice. I like the green one especially, and the changes to the red As looks nice a subtle, it took me a minute to figure out what all you changed. Its a great way to add variety.

I repainted my A-Wings green also. The squadron color is "Green", so why shouldn't they be painted green?

My understanding is that the movie A-Wings couldn't be green because of the green-screen used in filming.

Those are pretty sweet. I've never painted miniatures before, so how do you do it if I wanted to start? I mean, do you just paint over them with the color of your choice, or do you have you use some kind of base first?

I just use a x-acto blade with light pressure and patience to remove paint. I do not prime as paint takes really well to these even if very thin. I like the paint cut with water to be the consistency of milk. I am going to strip another one to paint green, I will post progress pictures. scraping the paint is a little time consuming so I suggest some good music and a magnifier if you have one. Vallejo Airbrush paint works really well right out of the bottle.

Cool! Thanks for the tips TRamsey. :)

Wow scraping it with an x-acto is pretty brave, I would be pretty concerned about ruining all the nice details. As an alternative Jay Adan posted

I will stick to the scraping method it will not melt the styrene, and it is so easy you only have to scrape lightly on the A-Wing to remove the paint and there is no primer on the miniature just red, grey, black paint, and a wash. But to each his own, I like the results I get and the minimum effort since I have other projects going I do this on the side when other things are drying :)

I've had good luck using brake fluid to strip paint off models and minis. I haven't tried it on any X-Wing minis, but i had a plastic model soaking for over a year with no problems (I forgot it was there).

True I almost forgot about good old brake fluid it is very non invasive. I will have to try this on a mini to see the results.

I just want to change some of the existing paint locally. Could I paint over existing color? Like for example use light gray on top of some of the red paneling to dull it down a bit and then after add a layer of a different color? Stripping the whole model and starting from scratch seams like a big effort considering the paint is quite good as is.

What paint brand works best to match the existing matte finish without using a matte sealer?

I am currently useing Vallejo Airbrush paint to good effect keep in mind the ship is not pained white to begin with so there is no scratching thru white paint or thru primer to worry about it is bare plastic that gives the white color. All that could be removed is the wash effect which is easily replaced with any number of black after market washes. I do not plan on any sealer atm I think a little wear and tear might do these miniatures some good personally.

You mean like this? ;)

YES! Awesome!

Sweet! Where did you get the prototype fig?

I scratch-built 3 of them for game play to spice the look up a bit.

Paint was roughed out in this photo for color test.

Very cool. I'll just sit here and bask in the awesomeness. :)

Thanks, the build was really very easy just really small to work with materials cost me almost nothing.

Did you use molds?

I did use one press mold made from green stuff for the cockpit area, but the rest was scratch built assembly line style.
