Hero vs Hero skirmish conversion?

By Haergrim, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey all,

I was toying with an idea to try something different with the components and rules of the game, and that was to do a two-team Heroes vs Heroes skirmish match. (3v3, or 4v4)

So far I haven't thought of anything that would stop this from working, and don't really see any rule tweaks I'd have to implement other than changing how turn order works.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

All text that says monsters must have the keyword monster changed to antagonist, if it makes sense.

All text that uses the word overlord must be ignored.

Maybe the hero turns should be chose randomly?

I like this idea very much.

One could also think of monster teams fighting one against the other... see what 4 goblin archers can do against a shadow dragon.

I suppose it goes without saying that you would modify the attack rules to allow heroes to target heroes on the other team. RAW, heroes can only target monsters with attacks, and vice versa.

I guess the easiest fix is to say "any figure on YOUR team counts as a "hero" for abilities and attacks. Any figure on an OPPOSING team counts as a "monster" for the same."

My game group plays lots of online RTS pvp games like League of Legends and Dota so this idea of pvp for descent heroes really has been something we always come back to discussing. It does seem like a lot of fun. We ended up getting stuck on these ideas

  • How we would scale the heroes with XP and gold for new items
  • Would classes be unique (as in can both teams have a Knight)
  • Would the heroes themselves be unique (both teams will fight over who got Steelhorns)
  • Would items be uniqe to the team or to both. Obviosly all these ideas would mean making proxies of cards or getting a second set of the game.
  • Would the players all start with a flat amount of XP each and gold for the team, that way they can only buy a limited amount of items
  • Can a campaign be designed where there are a series of quests that faces the two teams against each other in different scenarios, that way the players all get to scale in XP and gold (possibly to build in ways to counter the strengths of the other team). This can also make relics available to winning teams.
  • Maybe neutral monsters can be somehow put into scenarios to add bonuses to the team that kills them.

I was just thinking about this. And I was also thinking about a doppelganger quest that would be interesting to play. At least one! I know the monster Chaos beast still exists, but to have verbatim copies of the heroes for a quest would be an interesting one!
