The Animal Riding skill?

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Here's something I noticed last night, reading through the skills: how does someone ride animals? You know, something like Beast Riding in the old D6 system. It's not planetary piloting - but that's the only thing that's close.

So how would you make the players ride Taun-Tauns and that thing Kenobi was on in Episode 3?

Oooh, oooh, I know this one. Survival: One of the bullet points under it "Survival governs a character's ability to handle domesticated animals, so that they may be used as beasts of burden or as transport."

It actually also brings up Beast Riding in a sidebar for "custom skills" on page 102. Saying if you're going to be on a planet constantly where it's used a lot, you might make it into its own skill.

Riding (Surface) (Agility)

Riding (Airborne) (Agility)

As far as making the players ride taun-tauns, I'm not sure they exist. But I'd probably default to threats and throwing things*

* I do not actually advocate threats or throwing things, just in case anyone takes this statement as super serious.

Like Split Light said, the Survival skill, especially as it's called out in the rules.

Unless animal riding is going to be a constant feature of your campaign, it's really not worth creating a custom skill that might only see use under very specific circumstances. Besides, most animals that the PCs are going to be riding are going to be domesticated anyway, so as was noted, Survival's got you covered.

I'd argue that Survival would probably work well enough for PCs riding non-domesticated animals with a difficulty increase or upgrade, or possibly one or more setback dice. I like the setback dice idea best because we so often see ranked talents that takes away setback dice, so some sort of animal empathy talent seems workable.
