Will 2 Falcon builds stand strong in wave 3?

By jackb275, in X-Wing

I've yet to loose to my 2 falcon build. While I've heard many conjectures about how someone might beat this build I've played it against 8 different squads with really good opponents and never lost. I've lost one ship but never both.

2 Falcon Ace

49 pts - Chewie (42) with

* Gunner (5)
* Mercenary Co-pilot (2)

51 pts - Lando (44) with

* Nien Nuub (1)
* Push the Limits (3)
* Mercenary Co-pilot (2)
* Falcon title card (1)

I've been able to run parallel to the asteroid field take pot shots and force the other fleet to move where I want them. Generally the Falcon's maneuverability is underestimated by the time we get within range 2 or 1. At this point I've usually knocked a ship or two out.

The Falcons are very easy to plan and place wherever I want. They do usually stay within 1 of each other even on turns. Lando stays behind Chewie almost directly trailing him. Chewie moves first grabs a focus or target lock action then Lando moves a green fwd action because of Nien and bam, Chewie has TL & focus. I really don't care if its at range 3 or not because of the Mercenary co-pilot...don't knock it. I always use his crit ability in every match. Obviously Lando can use PTL when he has a shot--then perform a green move next turn. 2 TL Focused shots per turn with 360 degree arc = scary.

I've faced swarms, dual HLC bounty hunters, 5 rebel ships, interceptors and Vader with missiles.

Missile squads have gotten the closest to killing both ships.

Any thoughts on how to take this build down? Will it be able to stand in up this well in wave 3?

3 B-Wings with HLC. Fin.

I certainly hope that's true....I ordered several B's. I have a feeling it will depend upon the dial. The 2 falcon build has more hit points but one less gun. Those guns are TL & focused for nearly every shot though....

Can any imp squads take this on?

How are your falcons running against Seven tie swarms? I flew four squints and squeaked out a win against a similar two falcon build. I did one round Lando before he got a shot off. So the game is a fluke.

I don't see large ships lasting against bomber lists. Cluster missiles on cheap bombers flying with Jonus backed with cheap TIEs is going to be a large ship killer.

The ability to one shot tie's with the dual TL & focus falcon shots has helped me win against the swarm build. Chewie had 3 hp left and Lando only suffered 2 hits. If they are tie's rather than interceptors then they don't really hit hard enough. The other consideration is you really could use a swarm chain to get your shots off against the PS5 & 7 Falcons.

How you fly the Falcons makes a huge difference. I make my opponent run all over the board messing with formations, while I take range 2 or 3 shots at him and then close in for kills. Lando usually stays behind Chewie and provides support & a range 3 shot while making Chewie the ideal target hovering around range 2. I can flip flop them if I need to make my opponent spread their fire...but that makes movement much harder given the PS.

I've not faced too many missile squads. To be honest they scare me the most. Their expected damage is quite high. Almost high enough to take out Chewie right away if there is enough of them. The bombers are certainly a consideration. How might you build a bomber squad to do this?

Heh. 5 bombers, 3 with clusters, 2 with concussions.

Or 4 Bombers, 1 of them Jonus with a Proximity Mine, and Squad Leader, The other 3 bombers with Proxy mines and Concs...4 points left over.

The proximity mines against falcons are quite excellent. Yes, you need to use an action, but if the bomber has gotten off it's missiles theres not much more to do. Turn hard in front of the falcon and drop the mines right in front of it, and when it moves it could face quite a few dice rolls of pure damage. You turn all of the bombers at the same time, all dropping the mines, and that falcon could be facing 12 dice undefendable. Then you've got 4 beefy tie fighters vs. 1 falcon

Have you faced a 3 BH squad?

This is the problem i foresee with this 4-5 bomber build. Bombers will not be beefy tie fighters. Their dials have to be significantly worse than a tie IMO. They only have 2 agility so a falcon could eat through that while these ships are trying to maneuver around to line up shots. Once they have droped their ordinance they may still be able to do some damage, but not on the same level as 4 much more maneuverable tie fighters. I think that once we see the way bombers handle, most people will only take 1-2 of them in their lists in most circumstances. Plus,even if all of these bombers is effective against a 2 falcon build, i don't think you will see it often because there are so many other builds that would tear them up. Its a risky big ship killer build that could be easy pray for smaller ship builds.

A couple of bombers with Cluster missiles, BH with HLC, and another tie (add upgrades to taste) is the recipe I would try against a 2 falcon build. A little more balance and durability passed the first couple rounds, even if its a little predictable and can't deliver quite as heavy of a punch on the initial pass.

personally I don't know how well it would do against a different squad, so will anyone run an all or nothing bomber list but against twin falcons I think it would be painful.

I am looking forward to trying out this squad and if it is against twin falcons so be it.

Col. Jendon - 26pts

Fire control system- 2pts

ST-321 Title- 3pts

Weapons Engineer- 3pts

HLC- 7pts

Gamma Squad - 16pts

Adv. Protons- 6pts

Concussion- 4pts

Capt. Jonus - 22pts

Adv. Proton- 6pts

Concussion- 4pts

Total 99pts

As a little twist you could remove Jonus and replace him with a BH and give the BH the HLC from Jendon just to give yourself a little more survivability.

I hope this gives you nightmares you " Rebel Scum " ;)

Oops sorry Schimitar Squad not Gamma.

Guess I should have said that I would probably obviously just creep all ships forward for 2 turns passing off target locks then see what the options are after hopefully firing two missiles of some description.

Quite possibly sacrifice the Schimitar pilot as a speed bump for the falcons to stop actions.
