Implication of AoR Beta

By fjw70, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

That means we only have a year to go before the FaD Beta for the full force rules (minus some tweaking after the beta).

I assume we'll hear more from Gencon.

Given how the Force has been problematic for every prior Star Wars RPG combined with the release of an AoR Beta book, it does seem a given that next GenCon will have the F&D Beta rulebook as well.

Truthfully, I'm still surprised that FFG is doing Beta rulebooks past EotE, since the core dice system is pretty much locked in. Though at least with F&D, having a much broader audience do Beta testing for a sub-set of character types that as previously noted have raised various issues in terms of game balance (which of the prior editions was the worst is up to the individual as they've all got their own merits and their own flaws).

I dunno if they'll announce the F&D Beta at this year's GenCon. After all, they certainly didn't give any hints of there being an AoR Beta rulebook at last year's GenCon. Plus, if the did announce the F&R Beta, then FFG would probably face reduced sales of the AoR Beta as folks not already invested in the system might just decide to "wait until we get the good stuff next year."

But at the very least the signs are that overly vocal minority that wanted/demanded official Jedi rules from Day 1 just had a year shaved off the wait time. So at least that's one less year of having to deal with "where are the Jedi?" threads & posts.

I'm not sure the people who are annoyed about the lack of Jedi are being "overly vocal." I'm in the middle on that issue in that I think a Star Wars RPG without an option for Jedi really is incomplete, but I'm not super into Jedi anyway, so it's a sort of incomplete that doesn't particularly bother me. At the same time, though, I don't begrudge those fans who are bothered by the lack of Jedi their complaints.

Yes, there are probably some sensible "working out the mechanics" reasons to hold back Jedi a while even after the rest of the system is nailed down, but that doesn't necessarily render complaints about the lack fo Jedi unreasonable.

Bothans, Droids, Humans, Gan, and Duros at least as playable species. Force Sensitive Emergent - a step closer to Jedi, an X-wing on the cover. I like the implications of all that.

As for a Star Wars role playing system without Jedi, that would be incomplete. No Jedi in EotE (and even AoR) makes sense. The only known Jedi at that time were Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, both of whom were in hiding. Obi-Wan died before the Battle of Yavin. Luke Skywalker while a Force user was still an apprentice Jedi until late in Return of the Jedi. There may well have been other Jedi still alive and in hiding, but none who were known to the Rebellion. The major known Force using players were Darth Vader and the Emperor. It is questionable how many even knew that the Emperor was a Force user.

Force and Destiny hopefully will contain rules for full blown Jedi, either looking back before Order 66 or forward to Luke's reestablishment of the Mew Jedi Order.

Certain it is that prequel era games will Jedi contain.

As for Jedi in prequel games: not in mine - I find the Jedi to be the most boring part of the setting, since everything is always made all about them.

I'm going to end up waiting and not buying into the beta on this one. I figure I can wait until the finished product comes out and let other people check the balance on the careers and such.

Me too. I bought the EotE beta, but didn't play it - I just read it and put it on the shelf. So I may as well pass on this and leave the book for someone who'll give it a good wringin' out. :)

I did that with the EotE beta as well but since I am actually playing the game now AoR will at least be useful as a supplement to EotE.

It's possible their game plan is to leave the best for last as far as those who want to play Jedi or Sith are concerned.

For me this is fine, its certainly more interesting than the 4th edition dnd version and if it means they recoup the money buying their licence so much the better as this should hopefully mean they'll produce more books before their lease expires.

I love EotE but I expect it to be the weakest of the three core books. So IMO the game will just keep getting better with each release.

I think it comes down to money. The same reason preorder DLC is so common in the video game arena.

It also allows them to test values. The dice system is solid but with new races, ships, and careers values will need to be checked. I'm sure everyone in on the EotE beta remember how disruptors auto killed if you rolled five advantages. A solid idea in theory but beta feedback showed otherwise.

I assume we'll hear more from Gencon.

Hearing? More like Seeing. I am almost sure it will be there when I goto Gencon. Only 2 months for Beta test.

Maybe, though it's not even "on the boat" on their store page.

Given there have been entire threads, both here and on other message boards pretty much chastising FFG for "dropping the ball" and not releasing a "full RPG from the start," I guess it's a matter of perception. I still chuckle at the fact there was a whole thread on EN World pretty much accusing FFG of having the (perceived) audacity to string the customer base along for two years before finally delivering a complete RPG with rules for playing Jedi.

Thankfully the more obnoxious posters from the EotE period that kept demanding full Jedi rules right away have departed for other pastures, so there's not anywhere near as much noise on that front as there once was. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there's a whole new slew of people complaining about the lack of playable Jedi in the AoR Beta forum.

Myself, I'm willing to wait for the official Force stuff in another year (figuring a F&D Beta), and in the meantime I've got my own homebrew material to make use of in the meantime.

Could be that FFG is just waiting to put it up for sale on their website until after the GC seminar. Given how aggressive the TAT for beta feedback is, they'd need to put copies in people's hands sooner rather than later, so odds are they've already got the books in the warehouse.

I dont find it suprising at all that they would have a AoR beta. mess combat and large ship combat are not easy things to do, and making sure you have a game that works before you publish is a good idea. Add in that they dropped the ball when they tried to do mass combat in Rogue Trader and the income from everyone drooling to buy any Star Wars RPG, and it seems pretty much a no-brainer.
